Alright, so while I wait for the D2000s to make it to my door, I decided to recable my D1001 today and see if they could compete with the JVC RX700. So far, the RX700 has defeated all the phones in my sig. I just really like this phone.

I've heard people on here say (with some debate) a recabled D1001 is 90% of the D2000 and the D2000 is often regarded as a truly reference class, mid/high end phone. So I just had to do it. The RX700 is just looking so smug in its corner with its cheap supremacy. I wanted to see if I could trump it finally.

So I used Mogami 2893 mini quad and a Neutrik 1/8", you know, pretty standard stuff. Everything went smoothly and when I went to listen, I did notice a bit of a difference. The mids are a little more prominent (which was needed). I don't think it sounds as different as a lot of people say, but its better.

However, was it good enough to compete against my beloved RX700? Decidedly... no. These phones have very similar sound signatures. But the D1001 still doesn't have the overall presence and refinement offered by the RX700. The bass remains somewhat muddy, the mids are nice now, but the highs are somewhat shrill in comparison to the smooth highs of the RX700. It sounds cheaper, comparatively. Which is funny, because it costs 5 times as much. Not including the materials and labor time of the recable. Well, I suppose you can get the D1001 for less than $150, but still...

I think I'll still keep the D1001, at least for now, because I like how small they are (the RX700 is huge), and that works better for me at the office. But the RX700 remains king. And it costs $30.

Its better than the RX900. Was the RX900 burned in for 100 hours or more? That makes a big difference. I've never heard anyone say they hated the RX900 though. But if you hate the 900, you probably won't like the 700, or the D1001 for that matter, since they have very similar sound signatures.

I'm trying one of these out on monday (JVC HAR-X700). Sent an email to the JVC rep in our area and asked if he could drop one off to demo. He sounded kind of puzzled and tried to sell me on one of the higher end phones in his lineup. I had to make up some story about thinking about getting a bunch for when I do charity type stuff and need a lot of tracking headphones that I don't have to freak out over.

@ fjrabon:

hope you enjoy them, I was very impressed (considering their price tag) of the RX-700s out of the box, but I would say you do get about a 20% improvement when you remove the felt and burn them in (the only mod ive performed so far). Just something to keep in mind when you check them out.

Wait, all one has to do is email a headphone company and they send you free phones?!

And to think, I've been going out and buying the dang things all this time!

On another note, I've been very curious about JVC's higher end phones. I want to try the DX1 and DX3. Might be next on the purchase list. But if they're offering them to you already, just get them all and compare them and save me a couple hundred bucks.

However, I heard that the S900 were preferred over the DX1, and I like the RX700 over the S900, so who knows.

Yeah, the HA-DX1 look pretty nice, and very comfy. The *couple* of opinions that are out there, though, don't seem to be all that positive.

For their price, you're getting into territory that may belong to other, better options.

You're right, they'd have to be a lot better to have the same value factor as the RX700/RX900. Except I actually just saw a DX1 on Ebay that went for $31. Should've bit. Oh well.

well, one has to first have a corporate account with your local JVC rep, as the studio I work for does. I've somehow been pegged as the headphone specialist, so I can kind of get away with stuff like this. However, if I got him to bring in a bunch of the really expensive stuff and my boss found out and I couldn't come up with a good reason why, well, it wouldn't be the end of the world, but its not something I want to try. However, nobody's going to bat an eye over me trying out a $35 headphone. All I'd have to say is "well, I heard good things about this model, I was thinking we could possibly save money if we could convert some of our higher end stuff to these and sell off the higher end stuff"

Funny, that.

When I auditioned a pair of RX700, they sounded very very sloppy to me. The bass is indeed there, but the mids just kill me. I can't find a better word than "sloppy".

Don't know how much burn in they had gone through, but at their state at the time they're no match for any Grado, even the SR60 to which the Denon D1001 are often compared to in terms of SQ.

Or your ears just got too used already with the mid-hump signature typical in Grado lines.
