R5, a new Android DAP by Hiby

Hello Everyone
I'm very pleased to be on this site having read through this thread from it's inception.
I'm an oldish geezer of 61 living in the UK but very young at heart and a keen amateur Hi-Fi aficionado.
I do like a good bit of kit (let's be honest who doesn't!)
My previous DAP was a Cowon J3 which I've had for many years and
spent a great deal of time listening to an eclectic mix of music, pod casts and audio books
mostly in 320 MP3 due to the size restriction of the J3

Having read this thread I decided to purchase an R5 directly from the manufacturer because I couldn't get one from
Amp3. For anyone else in the UK who can't make up their minds import tax was a paltry £16
and all I can say is Wow! what a piece of kit this is, I'm pleasantly blown away by the sound quality.

I've been using my R5 for two weeks now listening through my Shure 425 IEM's with a FiiO balance cable.
However my R5 does have a few niggles that I've found incredibly frustrating.
I'm hoping the good people on this thread can either help me out or point me in the right direction.

I've loaded a 512GB micro SD card and put my music in separate folders according to type.
So far I've MP3, FLAC, WAVE and HIGH Res.

Using the Hiby music app that comes with the R5.

Niggle 1)
When I look under the Artist tab at the top only the MP3 albums show up?
If I go into the FLAC folder or WAVE folder I can see the other albums in there and play the music
but all my albums in the different folders do not show up under one list.
Therefore I cannot make a play list with tracks from the various MP3, FLAC and WAVE folders combined
I can only make a playlist from each individual folder which is ridiculous.

Niggle 2)
Why can't I see how many tracks I've got or how many Albums I have on the SD card? I
know there are well over a 100 albums so far but I'd like to find a way of knowing the actual number.

Niggle 3)
On set up you can call your R5 a name which I've done. On start up it clearly shows my name.
However I though if I lose my DAP then my mobile number on the front screen might be a good idea.
I've spent ages trying to find out how to alter my details on the start up menu,
This is probably me having a senior moment but if anyone could let me know I'd sure be a happy chappy.

I've downloaded a few HIgh Res albums in FLAC format gleaned from the internet ;o)
They play perfectly on my PC and on my hi-fi system but.....
On playing some of the albums on my R5 most of the tracks have a loud clicking noise that I cannot get rid of.
I've tried downloading again to no avail, in the end I used Nero Recode to convert from FLAC to FLAC
This does get rid of the clicks but for some reason the file size is halved?
Will this effect the quality of the track? Why is the file reduced by 50% and is there another programme that is
better than Nero Recode that won't reduce the size/quality?
(Today I converted to WAVE format the file size is almost the same and the clicks have gone)
Still like to know why the clicks are there.

Out of frustration I've given up trying to get the info I want from the Hiby app and downloaded another called Pulsar+
so far so good, it's easy to use and from start clearly shows all my files in all my folders.
Any recommendations of any other music app suitable for the R5 would be gratefully received.

Lastly I'm happy with my IEM's but I'd like to upgrade my ancient Sennheiser's headphones any suggestions? Say <£350 ($430)

You could try the fiio app, and neutron demo, and poweramp. Oh, and I should say welcome!

I don't have any sorting issues of clicks in hi rez stuff so I can't help you there. But when you scanned your music did you hit 'scan all'? You could try scanning your card again and make sure it says 'scan all'.

As far as upgrading your ancient Sennheiser headphones a few questions come to mind.

1. Which Sennheiser model do you currently have? If you currently have an HD600 or 650, you may want look at an open back planar that an be driven by the R5 to have a different sound than a Sennheiser dynamic driver.

2. Are you looking for a closed or open back? Many more options available with open backs vs. closed back headphones.

3. Are you looking for a dynamic or planar magnetic headphone? While this DAP has a lot of power with the balanced output there are still some inefficient planars that you might not get the full potential/dynamics out of them without a more powerful desktop amplifier.

If you have a Can Jam event in your area, I would highly recommend you take your R5 and go and listen to a bunch of headphones. This is the best way to see what sounds good to you and what works well with the R5, before you lay down your hard earned quid for a new pair of headphones.

What would be on my short list:

Open Backs:
1. Sennheiser HD6XX or HD650 - (Dynamic) Even though this headphone is 300ohms the R5 powers it very well. 6XX is $280 to the EU via Drop.com
2. Verum Audio - Verum One - (82mm Planar) They look space age/alien, so probably not a good headphone in public, but the sound is really nice. Only 12 ohms so easy to drive. These are handmade by a guy in Ukraine. Amazing clarity, Best bang for buck planar I have heard - $349 online
3. Focal Elear - (40mm, Dynamic) Some think these are an upgrade to the Senn HD650s. 80ohms. These are going to be in around $599 USD new so a little higher than $430 budget.

Closed Backs:
1. AKG K371 ($149) or K361 ($99) - Amazing value for the money. 50mm Dynamic/32ohm. Very balanced/neutral sound. The lower cost K361 is less bass heavy. Super easy to drive (3.5mm single ended only) I just got the K371s and they sound really great on the R5.
2. Fostex TR-X00 (50mm Dynamic) - $480 EU for Mahogany model on Drop.com. These are a fun headphone with lots of deep bass. The Ear cups are beautiful. The Ebony is the most neutral/natural sounding but the most expensive at $620 for the EU. They aren't the most technically sounding headphone. You are paying for the nice wood ear cups. Honestly I would save your money and get the AKG 371 or 361 if you want a closed back.
3. Focal Elegia (40mm Dynamic, 35 ohms) - A new edition to the Focal lineup. Sounds almost as good as the Focal Clear, but in a closed back version. I've seen them as low as $675 used. Still above your price of $430.

Also remember for balanced headphones like the Sennheiser's you are going to need to buy an after market 4.4mm cable to get the balanced power you need from the R5 for these full size headphones. My Sennheiser HD6XX 4.4mm cable I found on ebay for $46. A Fostex balanced 4.4mm is going to be more like $99(from Periapt Cables) and Verum One and Focal balanced is about $65. (from Periapt Cables)

Plenty of others on this thread that will have their opinions on what they would get, I'm just giving you my thoughts.

so i tried adjusting the tips and it helped the kanas pro has a problem, the tip wont stay on the ridge what tips did you try or prefer

Charging time with lg g7 charger in 73 mins from 30% to 100% , idle battery usage is very nice in 6 days 9 hrs it used 8% according to android



i will try neutron it looks like i will use the peq quite a bit to tune isines

I have the same fit issues with the Kanas Pro. The shape of them doesn't fit my ears very well. The right side is always falling out. I have tried a variety of tips and the JVC Spiral dot silicone tips (medium small) work best for me. I have tried all sorts of foamies like the Symbio W's and they don't stay in. Most of my other IEMs work great with the Symbios but not the Kanas Pro. I would try silicone tips over foamies and see if you can find a size that works for you. Good Luck!!

I have found that the Final Audio Type E tips work best for me on the KXXS

Slide one on each iem nozzle like a gasket, all the way to the end, like a spacer. Then attach your tips of choice. I found spiral dots work best. This eliminated majority of fit issues for me.

I used the same mod and it also worked really well for me. It really helps with getting a good seal and significantly improving the bass.

I've got 2 options- Buy from Music tech and have it sent to my sister in Vegas or direct from Hiby store.
Can you tell me how the tax was added and how did you pay it.
Could PM if you'd rather do that.
Really need to upgrade from an old Ipod classic.
