R5, a new Android DAP by Hiby

Oct 1, 2020 at 7:33 PM Post #3,138 of 4,427
Doesn't it work on the device itself (or the firmware at least), meaning that it would be usable with any app that can be installed?
Or have I just completely misunderstood?
I think mochill doesn't have an R player, that's why he's asking about HiByMusic the app specifically which is available for any android...

I don't know what our plans are there just yet

I just got my R5 from musicteck.
Out of the box, power button isnt functioning, no reaction when pressed.
I did try to connect it to charger and all i can see is the battery percentage (50%) and the hiby logo but still i cant power it ON via "power button".
I leave it to charge but right now it was stuck in Hiby Logo now, nothing is happening.

Update: Musicteck emailed me they will replace unit

My R5 is still not here. The last tracking scan was 5 weeks ago. I am going to be filing another complaint with Canada Post and getting a refund.

Sorry to hear that, things can get lost in the mail yes. Where did you buy this from?

Dumb question but did you hold the power button down for several seconds?

I see, sorry, I just assumed that you had a Hiby R, my bad.

I'm trying to download that file for Audeze isines but it's proving more difficult than the intellectually challanged (me) anticipated. Think I'll put it aside till tomorrow, then give it another go.
You click on the name of the file on the first page then click on the Download button on the right in the next page that appears. On a browser on Android you may have to hold your finger on it and choose "save link" instead to prevent it opening as a new page with a play button.

But right now the convolver also has a little bug affecting these files on AutoEQ that requires a workaround of adding a few blank samples in front of the file. I've done this for you:

I tried the convolution filter and AutoEQ filter for me Meze Rai Solos. Yuck ruined the sound for me, took any of the fun out of listening.

Also @Joe Bloggs does it accept the filters zipped up so I can have both 44..1 and 48 variants active? Most other apps can do this so it switches to use the correct one based on sample rate and would use the 44.1 for all variants from that e.g 88.2, 176.4, 352.8.

These CPUs not up to the task of convolving at high sample rates yet...

I would just like to add that neither the convolver I provided nor the autoEQ filter can be expected to enhance everyone's listening experiences, but that is not an indictment on the convolution process itself. It is provable that for headphone audio, convolution by itself can be used to achieve the sound qualities pursued by anyone and everyone given the right filter for each person, under the condition that the equipment is not driven into distortion by itself or with the filter, and that the qualities sought by the particular person do not involve particular distortion characters deliberately sought after. Reason why the market isn't then dominated by just a few pair of headphones and then an endless plethora of filters to try,

1. I do actually preside over a subculture that does just this at the Telegram group https://t.me/jDSP_V4A
2. The endless possibility of the system is also its Achille's heel. The listener most probably has no idea what each convolver does to the sound, and those who do, are not the listener and can only help so much with selection and/or design. It's like trying to reach a piece of prime waterfront property using a Star Trek transporter but without a scanner or even a map. It is at the same time exceedingly easy and excruciatingly difficult.
3. Similar things can be said about the rest of the whole audio industry, except every time someone gets sent to the wrong place, the company still makes money. Returns can happen but usually don't happen for sound reasons alone unless you did the equivalent of beaming someone 6 feet under a cemetary by accident 😅 Whereas, there's no money in it for anybody in this "convolution" business...

For a certain reason above, I would simply put down this explanation and not make any follow up or take any follow-up questions 😅

Joe, I wonder if your tech team has ever analyzed why Amazon HD takes so darn long to load playlists, artists, etc.? I wonder if you could give feedback to them on any architectural improvements they might need to make on their end? It does work much better than in the past. I love the idea that if I hear something interesting (say on Sirius XM) I can just download it right then and there. But it just does not work on the R5 quite as smoothly as it could.

Unfortunately Amazon Music has been a black box to us so far, both programmatically and organizationally. The rest of the team has difficulties navigating the inner corporate communication structure of an English speaking company and I have not been instructed to assist in this regard, and my part-time commitment to HiBy has so far precluded me from reaching out to them on my own. We can and have looked at and / or corrected issues "from the outside" (e.g. determined that it is accepting non standard system signals for play / previous / next that we don't want to send with our hardware buttons for compatibility reasons with other apps; presented our devices to the app in a specific way to correct the no-hi-res problem at one point (it appears to be broken again); but so far we have no clue why it "takes so darn long to load playlists, artists, etc.". Ours is one of the less-customized Android ROMs on the DAP market so if things don't Just Work it's not clear with whom the fault lies in a particular case.

But if ever you manage to get in contact with anybody who is anybody on the Amazon Music programming team, don't hesitate to forward their details to service@hiby.com, and to me via pm.

Cheers,
Joe
