So today I finally decided to pick up a new portable cd player over at walmart, and I had my mind set on a Sony D-NE300 for 60 bucks. However when i went to the store, all I could find is the Songy D-NE319. I checked sony's website and it seems that they changed the models around for this year. The 319 is 50 bucks without remote, and then the 320 looks like it would be the same, but with a remote for 60. My question is this, Is the 319 the same as the old NE300? Or is the new 320 comparable to the NE300. Anyone know if they use the same circuitry? IF not I am going to have to go out to same other stores like circuitcity or target to track the old NE300 down. Anyone know if there are any differences is the old lineup of players and the new ones hitting the shelfs now?

Thanks a bunch.

The new models have a "digital" amp instead of the "analog" amp which came with previous Sony PCDPs. But based on preliminary RightMark results on a Euro-c(r)apped D-NE920, expect as much as a +3dB boost at the top end (highs).

Which do you think would yield better sound quality? I mean, I heard rave reviews about the old Dne300, and I am wondering if i would be dissapointed with the 319 or 320. I am new at this and I dont understand the real world differences between analog and digital amps......

32 ohm should be fine for the modern players, while vintage have been known to drive even several hundred ohm phones.

They'll drive the SR60 and KSC50s just fine and probably the V6, I haven't really heard anything about anyone using that phone in a while. The KSC50 are supposed to be used portably and so that'd be dumb if they weren't usable and the SR60s are used by some.

ok.. well the headphone thing seems answered, but mainly i want to make sure that the NE319 isnt a piece of crap. I know the NE300 is good, but have they changed things around in the 319? I know PCDP have a tendency to be hit and miss... so i want to make sure the 319 is as good as the 300. Hopefully someone out there may have some personal experience or have heard about the differences between these 2 players. Thanks

Well, if it's up to looks...the 319 slaps the hideous 300 around in that department, the 319 actually looks good whereas the 300 was revolting imo.

Actually...the 320 looks better than the 319 which is still ugly...the 520 looks nice however.

Why not just get the ne300? You seem happy enough with its review

. It'll also probably be discounted compared to the newer models.

i just care about the sound... the looks dont really matter to me. The main reason i just havent gotten the Ne300 is becasue the 319 is already purchased (unopened), and i dont really feel like trying to find the 300 if there is no difference. My local circuit city and target are out of the 300 right now... so if i could just keep the 319 i will if the sound is as good. If i remember the specs properly... the 319 uses one AA battery and the 300 uses 2. That makes me wonder if they are the same............

Makes sense. Since you have the 319 why not listen to it

. If it sounds good then keep it, otherwise return it. However, the 300 and 319 are not the same. As Eagle_Driver pointed out, the 319 features a digital amp. Whether or not they match the older analog amps in performance is still being dicussed.

Actually, the claim of the digital amp in the current 2005-model Sony PCDPs only applies to the D-NE520 on up. The D-NE319, D-NE320 and D-NF420 still have analog amps. I stand corrected, in this case.

I (finally) got back my D-NE320 back from my sis, and it drives my Eggos to loud volumes quite finely. I have no experience with the d-ne300, but the sound is quite good coming out it. Granted, I'm using 192kbs MP3s, but it sounds extremely well. Sonuds a bit better than my Samsung YP-MT6, in fact. Only negative point I can find with it is that the amp is a bit hissy, but that can only be noticed with sensitive phones and in quiet passages in songs in a quiet room.

As you can see in my sig, I have the D-NE319, and I think it's a decent player for the $50 that I paid for it at Wal-Mart (although at another Wal-Mart nearby, I could've gotten it for $40). I think the sound quality is quite good, but I think it should be cleaner (maybe the digital amplifiers in the higher end models clear this up). In comparison to the headphone and line out jack on my computer, they beat the headphone out on the D-NE319, but not by much. If you feel more comfortable with the D-NE300, I would go for it. I looked up PriceGrabber and the blue D-NE300 is $59.99 at 6th Ave Electronics (http://www.6ave.com)
