PX100-II Review | Discussion Thread

modded KTXPRO1 I like a  lot more than PortaPro modded or not. Give it a shot maybe. Don't expect it to beat your PX100 but be a nice complement to it when you want a more aggressive sound. BTW I plan to recable my PX100 with 24AWG EBS/ABU grade cable. Really nice pure copper stuff when it arrives. The stock cable is trash. It'll never fit in its case with the new cable but that's okay. Some hifi modders do mods to the driver itself. Anyone know some that don't involve drilling?

Thanks for suggestion. I made new diy pads for portas, from same foam as my px100 pads, and they improved sound and comfort aswell. Comfort still can't match px100 though. But I feel portas do complement px100 well, so it's nice to have them.

Does anyone know good IEM with similiar sound signature and character as PX100-ii?

Try the SoundMAGIC E10.
A bit more on upper mids / highs. Same engaging dynamics and present midrange.

Thanks again for suggestion! I received E10 this week, and I like them very very much! Definitely has pretty similiar signature with PX100 II. I love E10 very much!

Be careful buying on eBay, as I was looking to grab a 2nd pair and noticed some fakes being sold.

Anyone had a chance to compare these with the newer HD 2 series? I had a pair of PX100 and loved them. Am looking at buying the PX100-II now. I came across the HD 2 series which also look promising.

I purchased the PX100ii a couple days ago along with the KOSS PortaPro so I can test them both out hands down the PX is the winner for me.

Can you make a short comparison please? I have the PX 100-II but I thought maybe I will buy the Porta Pro sometime in the future because they are so popular.

What specifically do you want to know? I've had the PortaPro and they're very good, but prefer the PX.

  1. The bass is a lot more 'boomy' on the PortaPro. Sounds bad in some songs, especially if you don't drill holes in the grille, which helps tame the ridiculous bass. I got a lot of driver rattling with certain bassy songs. The bass is a lot better on the PX, it sounds a lot more crisp, sharp, and precise. This was probably the biggest difference I could hear, it's a night and day difference in quality.
  2. Headband snags and pulls out your hair at times on the PortaPro. It's two thin metal frames overlapping each other, so sometimes a hair slips in between.
  3. The comfort zone on the PortaPro is gimmicky. They slip out of the setting you put it on and have to constantly be set. I just ended up bending the metal frame to fit my head and preferred clamp.
  4. The cable is better on the PortaPro. The PX cable feels fragile in comparison. Also, not a fan of the angled 3.5 connector on the PX.
  5. Headband is a lot more comfy on the PX. PortaPro is comfy too, but the padding on the PX makes it feel like it's not there.
  6. Once you break the PX in, they're the most comfortable headphone I've ever worn. And I've owned the MA-900 that a lot of people regard as the most comfy headphones.
  7. Single cable to 1 driver on PX is more convenient compared to PortaPro having 2 driver cables.
  8. PortaPro build quality feels really cheap when compared to the PX. PX feels really good in your hand and has a little bit of weight. The PortaPro feels really flimsy and light in comparison.
  9. I like the way the PX fold up better than the PortaPro. PortaPro is like a small bulging ball, whereas the PX is nice flat rectangle.
  10. PX drivers fold flat. This is awesome because you lay them on your desk when you take them off and it doesn't have that awkward look of having a driver laying on your desk like a wheel. They also have a nice firm click sound when you fold them that is very satisfying to hear.
  11. PortaPro has far better modding potential for novice users because of how easy they are to work with. You can pop off the drivers, remove driver covers, etc - it's all really easy to do.

Thanks a lot!
I like the PX 100-II very much too, but sometimes I wish for a bit more air in the treble. Just a bit.
I also have the KSC75 on a headband and they are more airy so I wondered how the Portas are.
I only listen at moderate levels so I don't think I can get the drivers to rattle.

Have you tried the HD414s pads? I've read they make them sound more open. I've also read people just putting them over the original earpads.

Unmodded Porta Pros are not really great at all. Bass is overly empathized and boomy/muddy, sound isn't airy at all. With mods Porta Pros becomes very nice actually, but definitely not PX100-II killers by any means. PX100-II has better imaging, soundstage and has signature I prefer more, and is more airy. I advise you to try different foams with your PX100-II, more foam (distance)  between your ear and headphone driver increases treble, tames bass and hence sound becomes more airy. You can also make holes to foam.

I ordered a Schitt Fulla 2 for my PX. My on-board was starting to give static if the connector wasn't seated perfectly.

I wonder if I'll notice a difference, as my motherboard had really nice amplification and sound quality. Probably overkill for PX.
