PW Audio Cables Discussion Thread

Can anyone here compare the weight and ergonomics of FT and 1950s OG and Shielding with the Code 23? That cable's sound is terrific but weight and ergos are rough. I keep reading great things about FT and 1950s, but if their weight and ergo is anything like Code 23 I think I wouldn't be able to handle it.
I'm not able to compare them to Code 23 but they didn't make it into my survival kit because of microphonics. Especially if you tend to move your head while listening the scraping adds in an extra instrument to your classical music. Having said that, if you play doom metal then the sound of a saw may be a welcome addition!

The above is exaggerated but if you're as picky as I am then you'd want to wait for a follow up without the parachute chord.

I don't have the Code 23, but I do have the Fusion 1, which is supposedly much more supple than the Code 23. Not sure about the actual weight, but the unshielded version of the FT is very supple and should give you significantly better ergonomics than the Code 23. I use shielded versions of PW's cables and have no issues with comfort or usability. Shielding might limit your use for outdoors, since they are bulkier, but they do have improved dynamics and black background over the unshielded versions. I think the Code 23 is a solid copper core, and I believe 16.5 awg, which has to make it extremely stiff regardless of other composits in the cable. You should find improved ergonomics with just about any other iem cable you look at. IMO

This is super helpful, thank you. Will have to look out for Fusion 1/Code 23 comparisons. You’re one of the few I’ve seen say PW cables are reasonably supple/comfortable. The 1950s in particular, being made from stiff-ish Cardas Clear cable, hasn’t sounded supple. Code 23 does seem to be the benchmark for stiff. And maybe the record for thickest gauge.
I wonder about weight, particularly the PW shielded versions (their SQ sounds so appealing), and them pulling some IEMs out of my ear canals (a real problem with C23 for me). Chalk that up to my weird ear canals primarily, but I still need the right combo.

An excellent point about microphonics, thank you. I do move my head some depending on use case. I find the Code 23 not to have much microphonics at all. My only PWA cable, the Deep of Universe shielded stock with Mentor, comes with a lot of microphonics so I have to remain inert when listening. That limits a lot of use cases, though the Mentor SQ is still worth finding inert moments of my day. And you’re right microphonics does sound like a saw, not wanted in any of my non-cutting tool based music!
So it’s the parachute nylon cord that adds the unwanted extra noise then. I wonder why PWA uses that material, does the benefit really outweigh the microphonics effect.

I find it equally depending on what kind of clothes you're wearing. Like some shirts create more noise than others. Perhaps Peter should consider adding a silk shirt in the box for his customers!

Another culprit for me is not shaving for a day.

I'm using August Fun - same parachute chord.

Silk shirt :joy: watch out that may be PWA’s long term marketing concept behind the microphonics. The solution was always in mind.
I can’t see clothing and beard length being a necessary part of the chain when spending so much on gear. Where would this end? What was in my latest meal, do I have any congestion, quality of thoughts milling in my brain, emotional state. Will PWA pay for therapy so my Orpheus sounds microphonics-free?

My 1960 has some microphonics but my EE Stormbreaker cable is dead silent. I think it's the sheathing. The Stormbreaker does tend to kink up more, however.

It's Peter Wong and I believe someone posted his email a few pages back.

In any event, king01988@hotmail.com should work.
Please never directly share an email address on a website as the bots will spam him to death... Having said that, if the address has been mentioned before then he's probably used to it already! 😎

I got it off this thread several years ago. Someone helpfully posted it for me when I needed a re-termination. I've seen it many times since, including about a week ago,I believe.

Could you put your own personal impressions briefly when convenient?

I always enjoy hearing other people's impressions when it comes to trying to describe audio with words.
