Practice with some scrap wire first.

Tin your bare wires before you try to solder them.

I got one of the gold plated plugs over at RadioShack, is this going to degrade my sound? Would a good Neutrik or Switchcraft plug do much to improve the sound of BeyerDynamic DT 770's? Thanks

Provided that it is not falling apart, and your soldering is good, you should be fine.

The Neutrik and others are built better, and hold up longer, etc. But barring something actually broken, they do not sound better, in my experience. With that said, I personally prefer the reassurance of using the higher quality connector (I end up using 90% Neutrik - I just like'm)
