Prog rock

Totally! If you're into that mix, check out Haken, Leprous, Soen, and Caligula’s Horse. Also The Dear Hunter for a more cinematic vibe. Prog never ends, and that’s the best part 😄
My ROON library already contains every album by Haken, Leprous, SOEN, Caligula's Horse, Dear Hunter and hundreds more prog bands, either as local FLAC or streamed through Qobuz - been a prog fan since 1970 :D

Three excellent albums touted above I’m listening to a quite a bit the past week or two that to me all fall into a similar category, namely just being a bit different: instruments, arrangements, rhythms, all just off the beaten tracks enough to be interesting, but not off the wall enough to be just tuneless or annoying.

Namely: Hadal Sherpa, King Garcia and Brass Camel. Many thx to the recommenders (rids and Anon5150 I think)

Conversely the Roland Buhlmann album is not my bag at all!

I’m sure this group must have been recommended before. (did a quick search). I really like their recording/mixing as well.

I don't know if I rec'd them here or in the whoch headphone are you listening to thread, but I put up one or two of their albums recently and have been thoroughly enjoying their work. Great pick!

I figured they sounded in your wheelhouse. Sorry I didn’t check there. I keep switching my roon server and found them in the listen later on one that had been out of service for awhile. Great rec especially “Cheen”.

No need for apologies, bro. Cheen is my favorite of their albums, too. It's the most consistent for me, but Odd Times isn't far behind.

Just to keep things topical, I'll put up the album I'm currently listening to. I'm not entirely sure what to make of it. It's got prog elements, traditional Persian/Iranian (the band is from Tehran) and Middle Eastern motifs, some post-metal/post-rock stuff, there's some alternative in there, etc. I'm only about halfway through so I'm not sure how I'll end up feeling about it, but there are enough interesting parts that I'm enjoying that it might be worth some of you guys checking it out.

The Purgatory (rel. 2025) by Raha Project

Edit: Spelling mistakes.

Edit #2: I'm gonna add a second album and this time it's a real rec. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm definitely enjoying it. Some prog-metal/progressive post-metal from the Great White North (Canada 😂):

Sonance (rel. 2016) by Contemplator

Edit 3: I still can make a separate post for this rec so I'll just add it here. This one is an interesting mashup of prog, fusion, and synth rock that I'm really enjoying. I figured some of you might find it interesting. The drummer is reallly excellent and plays with exceptional touch.

One of my favourites from last year this..made it into my top ten of 2024.

new Jordsjo/BREIDABLIK Release last week.

<iframe style="border: 0; width: 350px; height: 470px;" src="https://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer...kcol=0687f5/tracklist=false/transparent=true/" seamless><a href="">Kontraster by Jordsjø &amp; Breidablik</a></iframe>

I’ve been a Jordsjo fan for a while and love their mix of Nordic folk prog. This is the progiest they’ve been, we get one 20 min track that is typical Jordsjo, some great sections but with a couple of ambient sections where not much happens. The other track is Breidblik, (again about 20 mins) I’m less familiar with this lot but it’s pretty reminiscent one of the better Tangerine Dream compositions. Should be of interest to many here.

I’ve also checked out the first Brass Camel release called “Brass” (seem to have limited vocabulary these guys 😙). It’s similar fare to “Camel” but less proggy and maybe a bit more mixed quality, but there’s still some excellent tracks and for anyone that likes their new one well worth a listen.

If you aren’t familiar with them and it’s your sort of thing you are in for a real treat.

My particular favourite is their eponymous 2018 release which is a double album that collects their early recordings prior to international distribution. The first few tracks are a bit more abrasive than subsequent offerings but from ‘Mine Templer’ there is a run of superb tracks and in fact the rest of the album is fantastic. All their albums are worth a listen though.

Lars Fredrik Frøislie’s new solo album is out today. He’s best known as the keyboardist for the prog-rock band Wobbler.

Wow, I didn't know he had another one coming out. His last LP, Fire Fortellinger, was fantastic, old school prog. I can't wait to see what he does with this album. Thanks for the heads-up! 🙏😎

Yeah, his previous album was excellent, and after one listen, this new one seems just as strong. I also recommend checking out the new Soft Ffog album, definitely worth a spin.
