How are different types of headphones designed? This has interested me. Where to learn more?

There are many texts on loudspeaker design. Are there any good materials on headphone design? Is this something that can be acomplished without a truckload of special equipment?

What an interesting question. I'm interested in loudspeaker design, too, and have spent several years poking around the Internet and buying books on them. Lots of ancillary stuff has turned up, too, but I've never seen a text devoted to headphone design. Doesn't mean there isn't one, and I'd be very interested if something turned up.

That being said, there are materials out there on designing microphones. Both headphones and microphones are sensitive transducers, and we all know that microphones and speakers are (somewhat) interchangeable, right? I'd stick my nose into the microphone lit to learn more. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but it'd be a place to start.
