predator or voyager?

Hi.

There is nothing that even comes close to the Voyager
when the contour switch is ON. It applies a 10db boost at
50Hz and 20khz which really lifts the sound, seems to widen
the soundstage and just provides incredible bass which is still
very detailed and in a nutshell, jaw dropping.

The only amplifier I've ever heard that betters the Voyager in this
regard is my Graham Slee modified Solo which has a variation of the
Voyager contour built-in...

More about that in a few days

OICDN did a superb review of the Voyager in his round up of portable amps.

Since having my Solo modified, I'm also selling my Voyager (I'm in the UK),
so PM me if you're interested.

Mike

Nope

But I've read enough reviews of ALL the portable amps considered to
be cream of the crop and if it's HUGE but detailed bass you're looking for then the Voyager is unbeatable. I forked out over £300 on the Lisa III XP and even though it had a bass contour control, the contour only works with bass frequencies so as you turn it up it seems to progressively flood the sound with bass and it becomes unbalanced. The Voyager boosts at low and high frequencies which lifts the sound - you get incredible amounts of very punchy bass but that balanced by the boost in the higher frequencies.
You also have the option to turn it off of course and then you get a very nice sounding amp with a flat response. Believe me though, once you try it with the contour on, you won't be going back to flat

Look, the best way is to buy one for yourself. Ignore that fact that I'm selling one

)

If you buy direct from GSP audio (the main Graham slee site) and you're not
happy, you'll get a full refund.

You have to be honest about what you're looking for.
If you want a detailed sound with great bass definition (but not huge bass)
and a DAC...get the Predator.

If your defining factor is a desire for massive bass that's not bloated, muffled
or sloppy then buy the Voyager.

Good luck!

If you're looking for something with lots of bass why look at those two specifically? Why not look at only those that have adjustable bass so you can get the sound you want?

Voyager, Diablo, various iBasso models, LaRocco PRII, etc.

Better yet, get whichever amp is most accurate and EQ up the bass.

I looked at these two because of the countless threads ive read on the portable amps and these two stuck out the most, but i will definitely have a look again, thanks. Didnt know you could return the voyager if your not happy with it, appreciate the info and will most probably try it. The rockboxed sansa i've got defnitely provides flexible eq'ing, but i'm always on the lookout for more bass so i thought a portable amp would be the way to go. I have a pa2v2 and after two weeks i dont even use it.

So what would be the warmest, fullest, bassiest portable amp around? In any of your opinions of course, not just by looking at the two massive ranking reviews.

I have the voyager, and i have tried the predator before, both new and with 800h burn in. I can tell you that the voyager provides really deep bass, the type that you feel more than hear. Fantastic, makes the sound real authentic. No such thing with the predator though. So its really up to personal taste.

The bass on the Voyager is by far deeper and w/ more impact. Yes, I have tried both.

Now if you need an smaller size amp and one that will play hundreds of hours on a set of batteries then get the Predator. Also the Predator has a gain switch.

Choose! the best would be to test each to decide.

I'll say if size, looks and having a DAC ain't a factor, get the Graham Slee Voyager.

Voyager with Contour is a force to be reckoned, with its quantity of bass and slamming bass. Much more enjoyable then the simply "tight-bass" Predator.

And the Voyager has faithfully able to make my D2000 sing very well too.
