I've heard recently R10 and understood that thats the headphone I must live with and forget about all others, so now I want to build a system around it.

I thought to buy only a decent soundcard (like REM HDSP9632) that has a headphone jack, but now I consider to buy an amp. My budget is limited to 1500$ shipped, so I think of deluxe PPA with all available options or Emmeline HR-2. (Thanks to Ticky now I know that HR-2 can be customed for 220V/50Hz).

I know that HR-2 is very recommended for R10, but has anyone heard the PPA with diamond buffers and R10. May be it's a good combo too? Thank you.

Jorg, I'd imagine the HR-2 is quite good with the R10's. I've tried the XP-7 and was astonished at how good this little portable drove the R10's, which are very amp sensitive. The best results I've had to date with the R10's has been with a Single Power amp. Mine is the SDS, but Hirsch has also had great results with his tube rolled Supra.

perhaps it is wrong of me to comment on a soundcard I've had no expereince with, but I would imagine the hardware your considering purchasing SERIOUSLY outclasses most any standalone sound card.

You likely won't have to spend the entire $1500 to get a very nice amplifier, and I'd suggest allocating all leftover funds + the origional sound card money into a nice source.

I never had the good fortune to have my ears come anywhere close to the R-10. But doesn't that headphone cost a whooping $3500?

As such, I wonder if getting an amp below $1000 might do the R10 injustice. Don't get me wrong, I love my HR-2. But somehow using it with the R-10 feels akin to driving a pair of B&W Nautilus from the NAD C-370.

A $1500 amp on a soundcard seems out of balance to me as well, given the relative utility of amp vs. source in their ability to influence the quality of sound. I second the idea of saving the left over funds to buy a good stand-alone CD player. I would save up at least $1000 to invest in a high-quality used CD player for the R10s and PPA or HR-2.

Not to me, I like the combo better than the R10 with the $2300 Melos Meastro pre-amp. I also preferred the humble HR-2 to the $2400 Emmeline 2 the Stealth with the R10s. Are there better amps out there for the R10 than the HR-2? I don't doubt it, but of the amps I've owned (a decent sampling) the HR-2 stands alone for me. In combo with the R10s its pretty magical, IMO.

I don't think that too many members had tried the R-10 with a PPA, and a good source, markl like it with the HR-2, so this is a good starting point, also ask hirsch about that, but in his opinion the best sound with the R-10 is one of the Supra amps so far, and for Nik............well this is another story (if $$$ is not an issue).....
