Interesting concept. I wonder if a slightly different angle could have given less of the rock on the bottom and focused more on the hole while seeing more of the valley / mountains / sky?
I enjoy the night time sky.
I tried a few different variations, this is the one that I ended up liking the most. I like the spot of light near the bottom, which is passing through the arch. Backing up sufficiently to frame the mountains larger against the arch is relatively prohibitve due to another larger rock rising behind the spot I took this shot from. At best it's a moderly wide angle shot rather than the ultrawide I used here, and being that the mountains are still 10-15 air miles away, it's not very possible to really make the mountains loom large in this shot.
Do you have any experience with variable density filters? I've been interested in them, but never given any a shot due to the cost. What I'm wondering is mostly how easy it is to control the exact amount of exposure reduction, and if it gets banding like a polarizer if turned too far or used on an ultra-wide.
I've got one of those. Haven't had it for long, and only used it on a few occasions, but using it is pretty straight forward.
You will get banding with wide-angle lenses, but using it on a 50mm lens as I have, I can't really fault it.
This was one of my first attempts with long exposere using the filter. Light reduction was moderate.
Wonderful sky, but it's too bad you weren't able to get anything to go with it in the fore/mid ground. Still, as a purely sky shot it works well. We just had rain and thunderstorms here today.
Earbud drivers. SMC Macro Takumar 50mm f4 @ 9.5, Maglight flashlight as primary light source.
Also, forgot to mention that I used 50mm of extension tubes and had my lens close to it's minimum focusing distance -- I think that would be about 60mm of total extension.
Did anyone like the pictures I posted a page back by other photographers? I'm just curious as to the general preferences in this thread. Do most of you agree with Towert7 and not find them interesting?
