If any strobist fanatics have any comments, I'm all ears.
I just used 4 florescent lights pretty much directly in front of me against a white cardboard background.
haha..very nice..very nice lighting. Just my 2 cents. There is no need to completely eliminate shadows always. Shadows are your friends if you have it at right place. They can create bit more drama.
I like that certain 'look' you are getting...very appealing. I'll have to work with Lightroom a little more to see if I can emulate that certain warmth you achieve.
I used extension tubes, which allows the lens to focus closer than the minimum focus distance.
By reducing the minimum focus distance along with the long focal length of the lens, I was able to defocus the background effectively, despite not having a f/2.8 lens.
Minor footnote: the shots above were processed in Lightroom for noise, sharpness and white balance, and were shot at ISO 800, shutter speed 1/250s.

It is Indonesia. THX, I actually want to improve by getting a tripod, I took a large backpack of camera gear on the plane but have never purchased a tripod over here. The photograph could have been improved with a higher F stop I feel.

I use noise reduction and the vivid setting which can give the straight out of camera shots a different look than what I have been able to get by post processing with CS5 Extended. I really think everyone should shoot that way only because it gives you more choices in the end. Many times even at return locations the results can change. The Jpegs are really a different look!
I think the warmth has been created by sometimes having the white balance set manually for shade in direct sun. Other sun set shots were just warm because they were amazing warm sun sets on their own. I'm using the cheapest Nikon and a AIS Nikon 50mm 1:2 which you can pick up on E-bay right now for about $70.00 usd. Ya, my favorite lens is an old 1980s prime 50mm which ends up being a 75mm on a DX body. I really don't own any expensive equipment.
Studio setup with strobes. Background is 20 feet away and unlit, shot at 1/250, F16 or so. The "laying down" shots are a completely different 2 light setup with the keylight as an overhead gridded softbox shot through a scrim and a ride side gridded kicker. Other two are a 3 light setup with strip softboxes and a grid for the cables.
