I also had the same experience back in the past. Their software has gone a long ways since then, luckily.

My desktop today... I like to keep my system as minimal as possible without losing functionality

What's wrong with that? For everyone else using two screens I highly recommend UltraMon. It's a small app that makes the experience a lot more productive
