One more of Danse Society. This is unauthorized. But I enjoy some of the old concert and video footage.

The only band that ever came close to being better than the Bunnymen.
The one year they overlapped releases, 1983, I'd give Script of the Bridge the edge over Porcupine. I actually rate The Sound over both (just barely). The Sound were labelmates with the Bunnymen on Korova for the first few albums, and Bunnymen got the bulk of the promo dollars at the time. Those albums are being reissued by Rhino (UK only for whatever reason) on colored vinyl on Nov 29. Piccadilly is reasonably priced, and All Fall Down (1982) pre-order randomly showed up on Amazon for a good price, but not the other two yet.

[Edit: I'm seeing The Chameleons this week at Levitation Austin!]

Great thread! Thanks for the heads up on Magazine and Comsat Angels. I was not familiar with them.

Interpol and Joy Division are high on my list of favorite groups. Post Punk is certainly my favorite sub-genre.

A few more of my post punk favorites:

R.E.M. - Murmur
Echo and the Bunnymen - Crocodiles
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Juju
The Chameleon UK - Script of the Bridge
The Cure - Pornography

If we're having R.E.M. can we have Pylon and The Method Actors? So good. The sort of Americana I fetishise tbh. The Athens scene was a rich one, I can't even remember all the names that came out of it.

Noone's mentioned Pere Ubu yet - pretty seminal Post-punk I would have thought.

Also, Juju is a true classic.

Yes to Method Actors! I'd also add the Suburbs -- I wrote about both their double albums:

Fester's Lucky 13 2024: Punk & Post-Punk
https://fastnbulbous.com/lucky-24/#punk

Those who have followed me for a bit know that post-punk is my jam. My first records were Gary Numan’s The Pleasure Principle and Talking Heads’ Fear of Music. I focused on post-punk on my college radio show and have never stopped seeking it out. Aside from a period in the late 90s when post-punk pickings were lean, it’s never really receded, despite some complaints from the normals when there was a resurgence in the 2000s, Now it’s part of the fabric of a wide variety of music — I have over 120 albums in this list, including punk, art punk, pop punk and Celtic punk.

Bubbling under: Smoke Bellow, Desperate Journalist, And Also The Trees, X, Hamish Hawk, Ist Ist, Sprints, Spectres, Black Doldrums, Rosegarden Funeral Party, Then Comes Silence, Objections, Loose Articles, Erotic Secrets of Pompeii, Rope Sect, Crows, Winged Wheel, Tribulation, The March Violets, Slate, Inca Babies, Chain Cult, Omni, High Vis, Nightshift, Kid Congo & the Monkeybirds, Nadine Shah, Ekko Astral, Moin, Idles. | More.

Passion Fodder is a new discovery. I learned about the Paris based Orchestre Rouge, a post-punk band that released two albums in 1982-83, lead by American ex-pat Theo Hakola. He then took a parallel path as Nick Cave & Bad Seeds of literate garage noir with Passion Fodder in 1984-91. What Fresh Hell is This? is the band’s fifth and last album, in dire need of a reissue. Hakola continued putting out nine solo albums since then, and are recommended for fans of the likes of Sixteen Horsepower/Wovenhand.
