I love the idea of bypassing the distinctly average ipod DAC and extracting the data files untouched but I have no use for this at home.

What I really would love is the ability to have this on the go.
The closest I have seen is modding an ipod 5.5g (the DAC is supposed to be much better) and using a portable headphone amp like Ray Samuels "The Raptor" with a specialised cable.

I know the 170i is not a DAC but what does everyone think about a device that sits inbetween the ipod and amp, with an internal DAC that bypasses the ipod DAC? It would need to be pretty small but what do you think?

Do you think there would be a market for this type of device? Is there something out there already?

Thanks

Philip

Could be great if iBasso did that in a D10 like unit. Technically it is obviously possible since Krell KID and the Wdia does it. As I understend it, it requires buying a license to an unlock chip that allows the extraction of digital data from the iPod. Whether that chip could be build into a portabel unit I don't know but it could be interesting as a slimmer, higher capacity and longer battery time alternative to an iRiver H-1xx feeding the D10 optically.
