popups

Google doesn't run pop-up scripts. It's all adware running on your computer. Or even worse, spyware. If you use regular kazaa and sweep it with adaware, kazaa wont run anymore. Yup, there's some serious spyware in there. (aka piggyback software).

GET AD-AWARE!!

i never use kwaaza, mainly because i'm not into mp3s. but what kwaaza bugs me about is how all the kwaaza servers (?) ping every machine out there. when i didn't have my hardware firewall installed, Outpost showed hundreds of hits (inquiries) in a few minutes. what a pain. as it is Outpost tends to block popups and ads (you'll see an "[AD]" where a plug in ad would be).

ff, thanks, i'll try dogpile.com a try. you can never have too many search engines.

I like ad muncher. You can easily tell it to exclude filtering on any site. It makes it easy because it has as nice little list of all the recent items (domains, targets, popups, ect) that have passed through it, so all you have to do is scroll down, select the offending site and tell it what you want it to do. Its really small and doesn't require a proxy config, plus you can turn it off with two clicks.

It also blocks ads in other programs!

I like mozilla as well because in IE I kept getting those stupid program install messages for comet cursor and gator. If I want something, I'll go get it, leave me alone dangit!

addenum: popup eliminator will not work correctly with the kartoo search engine. as it is my favourite search engine (supports about 14 search engine plug-ins) i will end up removing it.

P.P.S.: there's a "more option" in the tool bar which lets you use the shift key to temporarily bypass the popupeliminator, so, like popup stopper, you can do things like letting MS load updates, use kartoo.com page open, etc.

Avant Browser - where are my shortcut buttons? gives ie a nice windows xp GUI (so that you don't have to download and pay for the separate skin). had to remove popupeliminator as it was a little slow, and had to turn off animated menus.

PPPS: avant browser blocks the Head-Fi PM popup screen just like popupeliiminator - which makes you go to the control panel (cp) to pickup your messages. dang. nuisance.

PPPPS: if you enable middle mouse button activation, it will interefere with MS mouse operation. another option turned off.

PPPPPS: you know how sometimes you control-n to start a new windows, and sometimes you hit the "x" too many times and you have to start IE all over again? with avant, when you hit the "x" it seems to close it. but if you hit the "A" in the left sys tray it takes you back to your last page. NICE. I LIKE! to exit, use file -> exit.

If you have any issues or feature requests try the forum on Avant's homepage or send an email. Personally I would like to see an exception list for the popup killer. Sorry you had to turn so much stuff off, your computer must be reeaally slow.

it's like a Stratavarius...

it's a 1 gig PIII, 512MB, Windows 2000 box with a cable modem. everything is back to the way it was previous to installing those two programs. i of course had to hide my desktop / favourites in IE/Avant. nothing like hitting that left hand triangle and seeing all your personal folders

i have more problems with **** spam than with pop up windows, anyway.

and now it seems like i have to re-install popupstopper. oh well, i guess i spoke too soon.

Elnero...

Thanks for that link... Avant Browser is great

First time i've seen a browser with tabs... a helluva lot more user friendly

(I have a two button mouse with a wheel... you can click the wheel, but nothing happens... guess I lose out on those mouse gesture things... what are they?)

Try middle clicking on a link. Should open in a new window. That's just a typical mouse button though. Now try left clicking while holding down the right mouse button. Should send you back to the previous page. The opposite should move you ahead. Find out more about mouse gestures on Opera's website. I'm not sure if they all work in Avant Browser or not though.

Remember to keep checking for updates. He's been fairly regular with them.

Do any of these IE addon programs REDUCE the amount of memory that is used for the browser? (I still use alot of sub 128mb PCs)

I haven't come across one. The ones I've mentioned all use a couple of megs more from what I can tell but I've not paid that much attention to as I have 768 meg of ram so it's not usually a concern for me unless I'm rendering.

How much mem does it use if you have, say three tabs running? Usually its 10 meg per browser session.

Jan 15, 2003 at 6:49 PM Post #30 of 31
About 30 meg with 3 tabs and 46 meg with 6 tabs open from the info in Task Manager. Take that as you will.

Edit: Interestingly enough Slimbrowser only uses about 28 meg with 6 tabs.

Something else I've noticed, when you open a bunch of tabs then close them the mem usage doesn't seem to go down much. For example I just closed all the tabs but one in Slimbrowser and it's only gone down to about 26 meg. Now if I open just 3 tabs it only goes up to about 21 meg. Hmmmm, now when I closed 2 of those mem usuge just went up to 23 meg. Very weird.

Edit 2: Just tried it with MyIE2 and it seems to act more normally. On startup 3 tabs opened and it's using 14 meg. I have six tabs open and it's only about 21 meg. Close all accept for one and its at about 18 meg. (Previously it went up to 28 with 6 and back down to 18 when all were closed accept for one.) Now when I minimize it to the tray it only takes up about 4. Bring it back and around 6 meg. Open 2 more tabs and I'm at 20 and 6 tabs around 28. Seems to like there is a bit of oddness going on but MyIE2 definately seems to use the least amount of memory.

Another note when Avant is minimized to the tray mem usage doesn't appear to go down any.

Hope that helped.
