Are there pop-ups on head-fi, or have i inadvertantly contracted delayware? One of them was asking my permission to install something, so I seriously doubt it's head-fi.

But it's the only site I've visited today.

The most annoying pop-ups are from the Gator group...

I have no recollection as to when I installed anything from them (I think it was after installing their download assistance program when I was still on dial-up) but now it keeps coming up randomly (most of the time looking like its from Head-Fi) with any old stuff... I'm NOT interested Gator group!!

You can't even unsubscribe to it... I guess its time to have a sneaky peak in my registry....

About a week ago I downloaded Mozilla, it allows you to block the scripts that open new windows. It also supports tab browsing (new windows line up as tabs under the url window). Plus it's skinnable (if that is your thing). All in all, it is really smooth - I haven't run Internet Explorer since.

Look in your Program Files directory and see it there is a folder called "Save" and get rid of it.

My son was home recently and I foolishly gave him admin privileges so he could install and download stuff. When he left I had the Save crap popping up. Adaware and PopUp Stopper didn't help.

I also have a program (shareware) that cleans up the registry it is called Registry Healer and so far it has served me well.

I first uninstalled all that he added then I deleted the "Save" folder, then disk cleanup, next Adaware followed by Registry Healer. All is seemingly back to normal.

I concurr. Gator is one of the most aggressive SOBs out there in terms of weazling their way onto your computer. Whenever I see something remotely resembling the word "gator" i avoid with a ten foot pole.

adaware, spybot, or some other antispyware software.

the new mozilla engine has some pretty good built in anti popup stuff as well as opera. i never use IE.

Try Avant Browser it uses the IE engine but adds a lot more functionality such as tabs and a popup killer which can be turned on and off with the click of a button. It supports all the features of IE but also seems to support Opera's mouse gestures.

I had found a bug when using dual monitors. I sent an email to the designer and he replied personally on Christmas Eve to let me know he had gone out and bought a dual head video card and finally tracked down the bug and fixed it. Now that's service.

Edit: And of course use Ad Aware. Also if you have Kazaa installed get rid of it and run Ad Aware after. Then download Kazaa Lite and install it. Gets rid of all the spyware and other crap that Kazaa has bundled.

addenum: popup eliminator will not work correctly with the kartoo search engine. as it is my favourite search engine (supports about 14 search engine plug-ins) i will end up removing it.

P.P.S.: there's a "more option" in the tool bar which lets you use the shift key to temporarily bypass the popupeliminator, so, like popup stopper, you can do things like letting MS load updates, use kartoo.com page open, etc.

Avant Browser - where are my shortcut buttons? gives ie a nice windows xp GUI (so that you don't have to download and pay for the separate skin). had to remove popupeliminator as it was a little slow, and had to turn off animated menus.

PPPS: avant browser blocks the Head-Fi PM popup screen just like popupeliiminator - which makes you go to the control panel (cp) to pickup your messages. dang. nuisance.

PPPPS: if you enable middle mouse button activation, it will interefere with MS mouse operation. another option turned off.

PPPPPS: you know how sometimes you control-n to start a new windows, and sometimes you hit the "x" too many times and you have to start IE all over again? with avant, when you hit the "x" it seems to close it. but if you hit the "A" in the left sys tray it takes you back to your last page. NICE. I LIKE! to exit, use file -> exit.

Adaware is VERY good. Another program I like is Cookie Cop 2 available at PC Magazines download site. It lets you disable cookies or change them to session only, permanately block sites (I haven't seen an X10 ad in months), and shows you a lot of what tracking is really being done to you by a web page. Really speeds things up from a dial up connection because of all the ad graphics that don't get downloaded. Biggest downside is that you have to tell it what you don't want and that can take some time the first few days.

Edit: and forgot, Adaware will get rid of Gator for you.
