have heard the Utopia with many amps, SS and VT. to my ears the best amp is... well not a model but a type: a well made two stage, all triode, single ended 300B. with all the amps of this specific type, Utopia sounded magically, while with all other types sounded from very good to just bad depending on the synergy.

Again, guys, I apologize for the lack of choices... I wish I could accommodate everyone. Even though there are a lot of choices, I still think we'd find something interesting. For example, why is the HPA4 in the lead? Granted it's not a large sample size, but polls are fun nonetheless. Thanks for the responses guys, keep 'em comin!

Hi Stereo Skunk,

being one of the HPA4 owners, and having ordered the Utopia directly from France shortly after they were released (luckily because it took a lot of time after their release for them to be distributed where I live), I have owned the Utopia since about their release, I can share why I ended up with the HPA4. I have tried at home and mostly at my dealer a number of amps, but far from all (there are too many...), but especially some I enjoyed a lot, like the expensive Chord Dave DAC-amp.
For me, the HPA4 ended to be the best choice, globally, considering all factors, even if not the absolutely the best for each factor individually:

- First, high fidelity:
For electronic devices, where the output is entirely electrical, everything can be measured and perfectly quantified, the HPA4 has excellent results, among the best; some other amps are even more excellent, but at these levels of excellence, these differences are not the most important (BTW, as far as I know . the Dave was never measured at ASR, but I wouldn't be surprised if would top an excellent combination of DAC-> HPA4)

- Second, practical aspects:
I don't have much space on my desk, I want devices as small as possible and stackable, this is one of the reasons (besides its price) that prevented me from going for the Dave (I was often tempted into purchasing it, but it can't easily be stacked, it has the most unpractical shape, I never could see a way of fitting it in my study, it has an unpractical positioning of the volume knob, and so on). The HPA4 is rather compact. It has also a color touchscreen, and that color touchscreen is quite bigger than its competitors, making it so easy to use, I think it is the most user friendly of all amps I tried.

- Third, reliability.
There are some Chinese amp which are quite cheaper and perform better than the HPA4 (see ASR), but I saw on forums several person reporting issues with them in the long run. The HPA4 seemed the most "solid" of all amps I tried, and the Benchmark company has an excellent reputation re. the built quality of its products.

- Fourth, versatility.
I own a HE6se, which does require the power of the HPA4. Would I have ended purchasing a Susvara someday, I would still have the possibility of driving it with the HPA4 (I listen at low levels, the HPA4 was enough for me at my dealer for the Susvara; in the end it didn't matter as I ended up preferring the Shangri La Jr to the Susvara).

- Fifth:,financially.
While the HPA4 is already expensive, and much more so than the cheaper Chinese amps with even better performance, it is way much cheaper than a Chord Dave (the pricing of the Dave being something difficult to accept for my wife...).

When I combine all these aspects, the HPA4 is the clear winner for me.

Before the HPA4, I used to own the ifi iCan Pro (again purchased very shortly after their release, unfortunately without auditioning them), and at the very low levels at which I listen I could hear some noise with some headphones, I could luckily trade the iCan Pro in when buying the HPA4 ( I think it was less than a year ago). Strangely, what gave the fatal blow to the idea of buying one day in the future a Dave was auditioning the Dave + M-Scaler combination: while super-detailed, it made the sound feel too "thin", and biggest issue, at each track change I would hear a very annoying click sound, louder than my average (very low) music amplitude level, something the dealer was unable to solve. Then I knew I would never go for the M-Scaler and these issues were at the same time the definitive end of my "longing" for the Dave.

All the best, and enjoy your Utopia,
and don't forget to keep an eye on Focal's releases this year (now the Clear Mg has just been officially revealed...)

Are there any commercially available? I'd love to look into any you suggest!

for those of you that tried it. What made you take the leap?
My desk-side system started out with a Benchmark DAC2 DX driving Genelec 8030C monitors and Sennheiser HD650 headphones. A few years later I bought a pair of Focal Utopia headphones from a local dealer. They sounded sublime to me, plus they were comfortable to wear and quite stylish looking. Driven by the headphone output on the DAC2, the Utopia's performance was remarkable. I used that combination for a couple of years more, and then Benchmark came out with the HPA4. I was able to try it out in the Benchmark booth at the CanJam 2019 and 2020 shows in New York City. I finally bought one last September.

I don't know what to say. I like the combination. There's certainly lots of commentary on the boards that uses words like "bright", "dry", "sterile", and "flat". That just hasn't been my experience. I suppose I should qualify that by saying I've never owned a tube headamp. I've auditioned them at shows, but I've never lived with one for any extended period of time. I do plan to get a tube headamp at some point. Maybe that will shed some new light on the strengths and weaknesses of both the Benchmark gear and the Utopias. Maybe, maybe not.

The HPA4 has a lot going for it beyond sonics.
  • It's very solidly built.
  • The small form factor makes it easy to position on a desk.
  • It has two sets of XLR inputs, which is not common on headamps.
  • It has a set of XLR preamp outputs, which many great headamps lack (e.g. Pass HPA1, Moon 430HA, McIntosh MHA150, Luxman P750u, T+A HA 200).
  • Its preamp function is of truly excellent quality, which is not a given among headamps that offer it.
  • It has a wonderful clickety-clackety volume knob in front of a state-of-the-art analog volume control.
  • While the touch screen is a bit garish, it's very easy to use and likely enables the simplicity and small size of the front panel.
  • It lets this New York state native support a New York state manufacturer.
I hope that's helpful to you.

Cayin HA-300

Another that I wish I could try. How does it sound with the Utopia? Is there an OTL option on the HA-300?

300B into the 80-300ohm Utopia sounds nice. Wonder what power it can put into those impedances.

They sound really good together. Cayin HA-300 gives the, in my opinion a bit chilly but detailed, Utopia a real boost. The bass has good slam and fullness, the middle register is just as rich and true to nature as I love and in the treble nothing is heard of the disturbing metallic that I can sometimes hear with other amplifiers. Cayin HA-300 also provides a relatively large and beautiful sound image. Yes, the sound is a bit rosy but with Utopia I think it sound balanced and and the 300 b tubes match well with just a little too rounded treble, sometimes.

HA-300 can power it well. There is no shortage of power with Utopian and I could not hear no hum or noise.

ECP DSHA3F with Lundahl Nickel core transformers for Utopia.

Well, despite the HPA4 being in the lead, the results are far more evenly spread than I anticipated.

Oh well. Guess we just gotta get one of each, as always.

Thanks guys for participating, and I hope people will continue to vote and add their opinions here!
