Hi guys,

I just found some old headphones that I forgot I had. I bought them back in the early 1990's I think. I hope you can help me identify them and share some specs on them.

As you can see from the pictures, they are named "PMB 65". Is PMB simply the manufactor? I seem to remember these were AKG's or maybe even Peerless, but I'm not sure at all. Please tell me what you know about these. Apparently they are German made.

Beware the pictures. I had to replace the earpads + inner foam because they were totally deteriorating. So I took the pads and foam from my DT 770's, which fits nicely after sanding the diameter of the PMB 65's a bit down. I'm ordering new pads and foam for my DT 770's of course.

Soundwise, compared to my DT 770's, the PBM 65's lack deep bottom end, but apart from that, they sound pretty open and clear, especially in the upper mids, which makes them usable in my studio work, recording and mixing music.

Since the "Insert image" function here results in an error ("There was a problem submitting this to the server. Please try again."), here are a few links to pictures:

yes Peerless-MB
Can't seem to find anything either looked at a few old catalogs too.

Have you ever opened them up to see if they are an Orthodynamic or a dynamic? My guess would be dynamic. Interesting post.
Thanks.
Nice looking pair.

Only link I found to any info on them was a post copied from an audio review place that listed them as follows:

[ reprint of the german audiophile paper stereoplay issue 12/1985. ]

Consumerclass:
18. Sennheiser MS 100
19. MB PMB 65
20. Beyerdynamic DT 330 MK 2
21. Beyerdynamic DT 320

So we now have a date at least for them.

I did open them up and stupidly did not take any photos. You are right, they are dynamic. Rather large diaphragm, clear in colour, dome in the middle and "coiled-up" membrane.

Thanks to you post, I somehow found an old thread here about the Stanton SRS-265 headphone. They are visually the exact same as mine. Even down to the floating mount of the cups, using small pieces of black rubber band, secured by small brass rings (see arrows in link to pic below). It's a total match:

If mine are Peerless brand, why are they not stamped "Peerless" anywhere? Looking at the Stanton's (and other older AKG's and Sennheiser's) I can't help thinking that many of these headphones were made by the same (few) manufactor(s) using the same components. I guess my lack of headphone history knowledge is showing

Around 1985 eh? It's quite possible that I bought mine at that point. It's hard to remember that far back.

Well how the ! did you find that post the odds are astronomical in such a short time. That was buried.

PMB = Peerless-MB so they are in fact stamped Peerless just not the full name.

Thanks for the link on this thing always good to add to the vintage info like this.

Nick, would you happen to know why I can't post pics here directly (I get an error from board), but have to provide links to external sources? I see lots of posts with pics inline, so it's possible.

Unsure another new person also had that issue I recently noticed also.
Are they JPEG's? Or maybe an unsupported format?  Could be because you are new a restriction of some sort?
Odd.
You hit the picture emblem then upload from computer right?

If you try sending them to me in the private message system here and that works then i can post them for you for now. But also you have limited PM's until you get a few more posts under your belt, which in this place shouldn't be too long. Be careful in this place it's bad for your wallet. ( before you even notice too )

Funny thing is, if I reply to that other newbie's post, I can see his pictures in the reply-editor. One other thing I noticed earlier today in our conversation here is that I can reveal text that you deleted from a post just by replying to it. Let me show you in the next post...

Here you go. The last two sentences.... you deleted them, right? They are back :)

EDIT: Oh wait, I've removed the post again. If you deleted something, I can't bring ir back without your permission. Sorry. But I CAN see what you deleted. Something is up with this forum.
