Maybe a Sony NWZ-A729? I am running a NWZ-A818 into a Slee Voyager and then into Westone UM1's... And I am very happy with the setup.

Running the UM1's straight out of Sony also yields good results for ultimate portability.

Cheers,

Ahmet

Hi,
the Archos 605 30 GB will be an interesting choice. Fine Sound (I use the 160 Gig model with UM2s).

I have a Sony A818 so I assume the A729 would be a great pair :] I have UM2's too. Great IEMS :]

i think ppl should take the low sensitivity and the hiss as a big factor too... as the UM2 is notoriously known for background hiss... and i hear sony players have quite a bit in that department... i could be wrong though since i never heard any lol

The hiss is barely noticeable with the UM2/A818 combo. The good thing with the sony player is the quality EQ, it is very clear and natural sounding EQ so you can tailor the sound to your liking.
For UM2 use I dialed +1 @ 16KHz and changed the DAC setting T-gain to +1.5 @ 10Khz, this gives a very pleasant sounding open soundstage for acoustic stuff.

I wouldn't recommend going for any of Archos range. The hiss is high and the SQ is sub par (used to have g400, 404 and 605)

Sony's do sound good.

I think probably the P2 would be you flash based player.

Remember though that the OP stated the Sony players are not available to them. P2 16gb may be the best option (got your back peck!!!! Besides, you usually think your answers out well anyways.)

After 3 tough hours of listining i fall in love in the D2
the sound is so flow powerfull and clean, the bass goes down very deep and the treble is so accurate,[ with no EQ changes and other sruff on]
the touch sceen is not so bed, actualy i downloaded a flash skin that turn the display 90 ° like in the p2 and its very comfortable, thank u all

as long as you can enjoy the touch screen the D2 IS the best choice IMO. The P2 is good also, but I love me' D2!!!
