My friend had one with a model number of SCPH-1001 that I randomly saw in his basement. Bought it off of him for $5 and tried it out as soon as I got home today.
Not a bad source for $5, not bad at all. However, it can't hold a candle to even my $165 Sony DVD player. It has slightly muddled dynamics, a hint of more sibilance, and less overall extension on both extremes on the audible spectrum. That's just the beginning.
Not a bad transportable or cheap-fi source, but I think you'll be looking at a bit of modding and added funds before you get one of these to sound good, especially if you hope for it to compete with multi-thousand dollar competitors.
