From everything Beyer has said (and they have multiple times) there will be no or very little sonic difference between old & new models. It is really just a cosmetic update.

I REALLY like the new 990 styling and have held off from getting the old style for this reason. I'll be a bit unhappy though if they really run $150+ more than the old version though just for the improved (to me) looks.

Beyer said the price jump for the 990 is due to materials.
