So the X1 and 880 are both on sale for a good price, the 880 of course being more expensive. Has anyone here owned both and can give me a comparison so I can decide which one to go for? I only have an SRH-840 these days and was looking to move towards something with a little more bass without compromising the mids and highs. I was looking at the Ultrason Pro 900 but it's out of my price range at the moment whereas these are $190 and $250 respectively right now.

I have not heard the X1, but have owned the DT880s and SRH840.  The 880s to me are very neutral and balanced and have a similar signature to the 840s, which I also found to be very neutral.  Imagine the 840s but with better soundstage due to its open nature.  The X1s, from what I gather from reviews, are more on the warm side with very heavy (although quality) bass.  I've seen some people call it an open bass-head can.  Biggest thing to keep in mind though, is that Philips doesn't offer any replacement earpads for the X1, which to me would be a dealbreaker since you will probably be wanting to replace your earpads if you keep these headphones for several years or more.  Just something to consider.

Quick and dirty version:
X1: fun, plenty of bass, nice mids, smooth treble (just enjoying music can)
880: refined, neutral, analytical, sharper treble, not as bassy, slightly recessed mids (serious listening can)

The 880 was making me pause because I gather from comments that it's a big upgrade versus my current 840's. However the X1 does seem to offer something different which I think will be worthwhile. Alright then, I think I may go with the X1 then! Thanks guys!
