What is a good portable amp in the $200 price range?

headroom's bithead or airhead. I think you can't do better in that compartment than either one of those two. (they are equivalent, just that bithead translates well for home use also).

Honestly, there are two or three mp3 players on the market right now that do pretty well with hd595 without the amp, like the recent toshiba one.

My Xiang Sheng 708B does wonders with my HD595, I really wouldn't listen to them that much if I had to use them unamped.

They only sell the "Total's" these days, so no possible confusion there.

The PIMETA seems to be another good amp in that price range, although $300 seems to be the nearest 'sweet spot'.
