I am planning on getting some Audio-Technica ad700 headphones. I really dislike the purple color of the grill, but being a grill it has holes. Is it possible to paint them without wrecking the innards of the headphones?

Yes, tape off the frame from the grill to protect the frame. Get a slightly damp sponge and put some paint on the sponge. On a paper towel, sponge off the excess paint and then sponge the paint on the grill. Make sure the paint is thin so as not to clog the grill. You may need two coats and be sure to use paint made for metal surfaces. You should be able to get some at McDonald's.

It will be much easier just to open the housing and take the grill out. I have taken apart AD700 before and it is quite easy.

[EDIT]
Here are how the inside looks like:

Second picture was wrong. Fixed.

There are only four screws holding the housing. Once you unscrew them, the transducer can be pop'ed out, followed by the grill. The most difficult thing in the whole precess is actually getting the pad back again, and that isn't that hard to do either.
