Hey hey, I was wondering when someone would post about this...
I was there, and boy was it intense! Maiden came on, and as soon as Bruce Dickinson came onstage, he was blasted by eggs and god knows what else by people in the pit. He gave dirty looks to them and gave them a good tongue lashing during the instrumental part of the first song. None of it was heard though through the PA. After the song ended, stage hands had to wipe all of the steps and most of the floor because of the eggs. During the song in which Bruce waved the British flag around, some guy ran out from *backstage* and waved a large American flag around. He had some writing on his back but I could not make it out (eyewitnesses said it said "Don't F with Ozzy" or something). He was "escorted out" by security. Bruce was very visibly livid.
A minute later, the flag guy came out again on the side of the stage by where the stacks of speakers were on the right. He then went all through the aisles waiving the huge (and I mean HUGE) American flag. Then during another song, somebody spat on Bruce repeatedly. He had security get the person out of the pit. Bruce said if he wasn't going to get sued, he would rip the person's head off and kick their butt. He was furious.
During the rest of the set, the power to the PA (main speakers) went out FOUR times. It was so obvoius that someone *cough* Sharon *cough* was behind this. Bruce looked very embarrassed and urged the crowd to sing along even though the power was out. Finally, as the band was finishing up their last song and taking their bows, the announcer guy (or it could have been a recorded track) kept chanting "Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy". Bruce and the band had enough and walked off stage. Everyone in the crowd was stunned.
Just then, Sharon Osbourne came onstage and thanked the members of Maiden and their crew, but she had to say that Bruce was a ... (rhymes with brick). People booed her from where I was. She said that Bruce made fun of Ozzy and berated Ozzfest and all sorts of bad things. She basically said he was a jerk and he was a mistake having him on Ozzfest...
That said, what Sharon did was humiliate not only Bruce, but the rest of his band whom she had no beef with. She pissed off the audience (half of them had Maiden shirts on). She made herself look really bad. Sure, Bruce could very well be a jerk, but take it up with him and only him. She made everyone suffer instead of just him. There were scores of angry people just around where I was sitting. Really classy, Sharon.
Overall a very odd day indeed. I got there very early. It was very hot. Most of the bands were bad. I went for Sabbath, and they blew me away like always. I must say, the thing that struck me as very odd was the unusually tameness of the crowd this year. The bonfires were rather small this year, and let me tell you they had PLENTY of fuel this year. used cups and misc. stuff all over the lawn after the second stage ended. I remember in 2000, Sully from Godsmack had to tell the lawn audience to take a chill on the fires being started. And when Sully tells the lawn crowd to calm down.... DAYUMMMM!!!!
Edit: bhd812: why would you make Ozzy suffer? He had nothing to do with it. It was Sharon's idea. I have a feeling Sharon will hear the backlash for a while on this one. Besides, Ozzy is calling it quits for the most part after this year with regards to Ozzfest. He said he will only play select dates *cough* Devore, LOL *cough* in the future. That does not rule out the toned down arena tours though.
