ATH M50 vs. MDR 7506

I'd *prefer* to have this question answered by folks who have had considerable
time (or at least some experience) with BOTH the Audio Technica ATH-M50,
and the Sony MDR 7506.

I'd like a comparison based only on sound quality. Ergonomics, prices,
longevity and build etc. are of no concern here.

I lost my ATH-M50. While picking a new pair up would be reasonable, I'm
intrigued by the glowing reviews of the Sony MDR 7506.

I would describe the ATH-M50s as "exciting", "punchy". I found that initially
the sound was cold and not resolving, but after a solid burn-in (or ear adjustment
phase, if you will), it was superb. The bass hump wasn't bothersome, things
had become very tight, and the whole spectrum was being resolved wonderfully.

Also, the much dreaded "muffled mids" was never an issue to begin with, but
with time, the mids got warmer and perfect.

How different is the experience with the 7506, and what can I expect? As hard
it is to describe something so subjective through adjectives, I'm hoping someone
will shed some light on the sonic-characteristic differences between the two.

I'd like to note that I prefer a very tight low end with zero boom/muddiness, so
that's a gripe I had with the ATH-M50's initially, although with time, the bass
became much more controlled and tight. How do the Sony's fare in this department?

Also, any muffling anywhere in the spectrum is a deal breaker. There are too
many cans these days which have substandard curves on one or more frequency
ranges. That's a strict no.

Thanks for reading.

I can tell you about the V6 vs. the M50. Seems like the M50s have a little better clarity; the Sonys maybe a touch grainy in comparison. The M50s have more bass emphasis; the V6s have a little more bass than neutral, but not as much. Then again, because of the extra bass, the mids sound slightly more recessed to me on the M50s than the V6.

Also, any muffling anywhere in the spectrum is a deal breaker. There are too many cans these days which have substandard curves on one or more frequency ranges. That's a strict no.

See, I can't help you with that. I've grown past the M50/V6 stage to more resolving headphones. That's the thing. Whether or not there is "muffling" is really relative to your experience AND your budget :)
