Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions

...and again, getting even more specific regarding the removal of the earpads on the PM-3.
Here is a quote directly from the powers that be at Oppo Digital, so take heed, and beware, etc... ect...

The PM-3 needs a tight seal between the ear pad and the driver front baffle in order to work properly. This is why the ear pad attachment mechanism is very different from the PM-1/PM-2.

Removing the ear pads requires some brute force. With skill and luck nothing bad will happen,
but we broke a few clips when we attempted this. If a clip breaks from the driver's front baffle, the entire driver must be replaced.

Not only that - since the drivers are paired for their acoustic response, the other driver needs to be replaced too.

When our customer service tells a customer to remove the ear pad for whatever reason (like yesterday a customer got a pair of PM-3 with a defective ear pad), we are prepared to take the responsibility to replace the drivers or headphone in the worst case situation. So the instruction and permission is case-by-case.

So be careful guys. If Oppo hasn't given you explicit permission to remove the earpads,
and you decide to do it on your own and accidentally break one the clips, that will probably cost you a hefty repair bill.

So the real trick is to drink half a liter of Franziskaner or similar to get the courage to pull hard yet with finesse.

Well this is NOT a recommendation from me to go and try to yank the pads off any PM-3s,
but since it's being discussed in depth, I thought I would share this.
It's in German, but the part you want to see should happen right after the 5 minute mark and
you don't need to speak German to see it.

Hooray to PM3 for knocking the venerable Focal Spirit Pro off Tyll's wall of fame.

He he he... I guess bright minds think the same way!

I sold my beloved FSP because I liked the PM3 better...

The more I listen to the PM3, the more I'm loving them.

BTW, did anyone find the long stock cable to sound a bit darker?
I may be just imagining this but I find them a bit darker sounding compared to the V-moda cable.
I don't have the Oppo short cable w/ mic/remote.

That's the real beauty of the PM-3s...you can use the regular V-MODA cables, which includes the Boom Mic Pro.  That's one of the main reasons I went with the PM-3s after auditioning them with the new Momentums.  Versatility and folding flat were two of my main "likes" about the PM-3s...after the sound of course.
