Oppo PM-3 : The Portable Planar - Impressions
Apr 11, 2015 at 10:02 AM Post #1,066 of 6,302

I agree...I use my Moto X and Tidal mostly. My other portable setup is an X5 and I can use my E11 if I choose. I am, in my short period with these, thinking the it is about the quality of the material you are listening too. I think the biggest difference is adding the e11 from a power standpoint and it provides more of an impact.

So how do they compare to X2?

Damn man, I have been trying to avoid you and this answer, joking. Let me preface this and say I really enjoy portable use. Obviously, X2 is not portable. The funny thing is at the moment I am sitting at home with the M2 on my head. I promise I will do a session only with the X2 and PM-3. As you know the comparison is not apples to apples, 1 open other closed. The soundstage is wider on the x2 however that said the instrument separation on the PM-3 is really good. Promise I will TRY today with a glass of my favorite adult beverage.

Haha... You can ask me anything you want, any time. It's like the unbreakable vow that Severus Snape and Malfoy's mom took. I'll never break my vow.

Sorry if I caused any hassle.

LOL... no I have a lot of people waiting to hear about the PM-3 vs M2 vs. X2 vs Velvet   Which means folks will probably want a definitive answer as the best.

Nice review! Can't say I agree about the somewhat bright treble though. I find that while the treble is present, it never even approaches bright. If anything I'd actually like just a little bit more sparkle up there. Do agree that the bass response is a bit elevated though.

I just posted the same comment on the review page, definately don't find them to have a treble emphasis, if anything I find them a bit rolled off up top, but the review was well written and very thorough, great job!

People calling the PM-3 ear cups small, how small? Momentum 1st generation small?

http://www.head-fi.org/t/653032/size-matters-earpad-hole-measurements-for-over-ear-headphones/30#post_11317874

official earpad specs: Height 60mm, Width 40mm, Depth 17m

edit: so no, not as small as 1st gen momentum, the PM-3s are a over-ear fit.

Much better around ear fit and more comfortable on my normal sized (I think!) head and ears.

Hmm..totally forgot I even had a SanDisk Clip Zip (Rockboxed). So I thought wth, and much to my surprise it drives the PM-3 great. This thing has been in a drawer for quite some time.

Again a great revew from you, thank you! I would not be suprised if these cans will end up at Tylls Wall of Fame. Unfortunately, the black models are currently sold out already. I'll definetly order a pair, very competively priced compared to HD6xx series.

I got the Balanced Silver Dragon cable on Friday so after 36 hours of burn-in I did some preliminary listening. I compared the Oppo stock cable against the Silver Dragon Balanced out of my AK240.
Volume wise I could not distinguish much of a differnce betwen driving the PM3 balanced or single ended out of the AK240. This make sense since the difference in output is 0.2 Vrms.
Sound wise I did hear a difference. I don't know if it is the cable or running balanced (probably both) but the soundstage presentation was significantly bigger (wider and in depth) in balanced. It also got more holographic allowing me to pinpoint better the instruments and voices within the soundstage. Also the bass got faster and tighter but without sacrificing extension.

I will let the cable burn in more to then listen once again but so far I like the PM3 even more with the Silver Dragon.
