Just got an email from Oppo saying the PM-1 will be available mid april for $1,099...

Nice, but why couldn't they do it at $995....looks much more affordable, and they'd sell more. Or maybe they feel the price over $1000 adds a sort of sophistication to it.

And now a new mystery:

... we will also release an OPPO PM-2 model which will be a more affordable version of the premium OPPO PM-1. The OPPO PM-2 will have very similar performance while reducing costs to the customer. It utilizes the same planar magnetic driver, the same acoustic design principles and tuning techniques, the same tight tolerances for quality control, and its lower price is achieved without sacrificing acoustic performance.

"Similar performance ... without sacrificing acoustic performance" seems rather contradictory. "Reducing costs" how?

In any case, good to see them get more specific, including with price.

Maybe it's carefully calculated to give them a comfortable profit margin...or maybe, like you implied, they think the seemingly higher price tag will attract more audiophiles to their products

Then why have the PM-1?  Sounds like the same headphone - just with a higher price tag?!?!

Am I the only one that doesn't get it?

Reading is fundamental. From the same Press Release you quoted:

Certain metal parts that require many hours of machining time and have relatively low yields in the PM-1 have been replaced by materials and processes that are more suitable for quantity production, and the luxurious hand-picked lambskin found on the headband and ear pads of the PM-1 has been replaced with synthetic leather that offers similar comfort and durability at a much lower cost.

By reducing the costs of the components around the driver, OPPO is able to delivery pretty much PM-1 quality sound at a "more reasonable" prince point.

Lambskin leather does not justify the price difference..
Anyway it is very interesting
