Could someone please describe for me the sound quality of Shure E4cs?

My local headphone specialist doesn't allow customers to test them for reasons of hygiene, so I'm hoping to get some opinions about how they sound - especially in comparison to closed-back circumaural headphones, such as the Beyerdynamic DT250.

Thanks!

I've only owned the E4s for three weeks but they are awe inspiring. Warrior05 summed up most of it. I might add heavily built, well engineered and presents an incredibly accurate image of the music. If you get a good seal (use the foamies) then, in my opinion, bass is no problem whatsoever. Make sure to email earphonesolutions for there best price. You won't be disappointed. They also have a 30 day return policy. I was suspicious of the e4s high price and thought I'd return them. They'll pry them off my rotting corpse. Yeah I'm quite devoted.

I'm not good at picking out good highs from bad highs, but durning the little time I had them, the mids were heart stopping, and the bass went low enough, but it didn't have much impact (it had some). Thats to be expected on an IEM, I personally found them great, but had to sell them for money.

Great, warm, and lush mids, a very tight bass, more of the well-controled type of bass rather than the flabby noteless bass, and a bit rolled off on the top end, but still quite listenable.

I used to have a pair ...
I basically agree with what everyone else has said. Wonderful midrange and high end, but I think the bass is a bit lacking. It's clear as crystal, but I wish it were a bit more powerful.

I like my E4 more and more. I basically share the thoughts above. The bottom end is tight but not deep. And I think the E4 needs an amp to sound its best. Lousy synergy straight out of the ipod.

But with June fast approaching, perhaps you should be considering the E500?

Agree with those above. I can't find one single complaint/deficiency with the E4's.

Weak 128 kbs downloads from I-Tunes sound pristine out of the nano.

I have them for 6 months or so now and I haven't felt the urge to upgrade once.

They are very decent. I don't know the DT250, but I would put the E4 about par with the HD280 (except when HD280 is very well amped) or the HD25-SP. I feel it lacks high end compared to the K271. It is pretty neutral-sounding, and compared to the A900 or HD25 has neither the boosted midbass nor the high-end tizz.

So all in all, very decent. However I do find the highs truncated enough to give me that "wanting more" feeling somewhat ongoingly.

I must be deaf because I'm finding that I like my E4g's more than my HD-650. The truncated highs don't bother me, since my hearing past 16kHz is pretty much shot.

The highs are beautiful, I love them for classical movies and opera. It also does a good job with acoustic rock and jazz. However for most modern rock I feel like the bass is definitely lacking.

I agree with episiarch regarding truncated highs. I bought my E4c and a PX100 at the same time, and price performance the senns are much better in that area and bass also. Nevertheless when isolation is required they are an excellent choice.

Thanks for your comments everybody - i appreciate it. I've since read some mixed reports in other forums, especially with regard to achieving a good fit, so i'm still a bit concerned about buying a pair without the opportunity to try them first. I might have to limit myself to the circumaural market so i can be sure i like the sound of what i'm buying. Thanks again.

You have to pay a restocking fee but earphonesolutions has a thirty day period during which you can return them. If you try them I doubt that will be an issue. I still wonder about people critisizing the bass on the E4s. I feel the bass is absolutely accurate. After three weeks I'm getting better every day at getting the perfect seal and it makes a massive difference as far as bass and isolation.
