I was curious myself and shot Beyerdynamic an email asking them about the sonic differences. Here's what he had to say:

etc.. due to the low impedance. Both have our 2 year warranty. The more
expensive DT880 has different construction and is a bit more robust, not
taking anything away from the DT 860. The DT 880 includes a carrying case -
the case is available separately for the DT 860 etc..

The performance of both is excellent and personal preference certainly comes
into play. Since you now own the DT 880, perhaps the DT 860 would be a good
choice.

I just sent them an email asking for more information specifically on the sonic differences between the two. Hopefully I'll find out something chunky then.

cool. thanks for the insight denl 82.

can i ask, have you driven your dt 880's from an ipod or dac? if so, how does it sound?

a little hesitant to pull the trigger on an amp right now, as i've never had a headphone amp. would prefer to upgrade dac, if that would be sufficient...

Since I have 2007 version DT660 which is basically same as DT860 (they use same drivers and sound same, according to some of threads here.)

If you live in USA, the price difference is mere 20 bucks now (check Amazon.com) Considering the fact you need to buy an amp for DT880, I'd say the price difference would be around 100$ bucks.

And I'd say, DT880 is 150$+ better than DT660/860. The overall tonality of DT880 is vastly superior and it is already game over here.

DT660/860 are very bright cans (even brighter than DT990!) and not many people are going to like these.

i saw that dt 880s for $175 thread today, here, and was going to pull the trigger and check em out. alas, that was the august price. i remember seeing that price realtime in august; was still doing research on headphones though and didn't realize the solid value there.

guess i'm back to the 770/880 quandary + doing my homework on amps vs. dacs.

anyone know a $300> dac that can drive like an amp?

No Problemo. The only things I've driven the DT 880s out of were my x-fi and two different stereo receivers, unfortunately.
