"Open Alpha" T50 3D printed headphone project from MrSpeakers

I've also prepared a quick stencil to cut the gasket required to seal the seam between the cup and the baffle. I'll go this way, rather then using silicon glue, in order to make it easier to re-open the cup - should it be required for further future mods/fine-tuning.

I think it would be more easy to use if you upload it as a pdf, so that people don't have to worry about scaling...

Thanks for the suggestion! I've edited my previous post and included a link to the PDF version. However, even with the PDF, it will still be important to check that the scaling option is set to 100% before printing the file.

I've decided to switch from the above gasket to the ones picture below, which have been cut from a thin layer of foam of about 2mm or slightly more. These compress much better and, once squeezed between the cups and the baffles, they are less than 1mm thick. Hopefully they will serve the purpose of properly sealing the seam between the cup and the baffle.

Is there any update on releasing the Solidworks files for these?

IGES and parasolid files are available for those wishing to make minor edits.

A special thank you to Dan / MrSpeakers for the generosity in sharing with the headphone community such a great project. It's been an entertaining and challenging experience... throughout the process I could really appreciate the efforts and the commitment behind the creation of a high quality product, without even taking into account the designing phase, which certainly adds up to the investment a company has to sustain before a new idea can even be brought to the market! Many thanks again!

Many thanks also to all the Head-Fi users who shared their suggestions in this thread, which proved to be helpful and put me in the right direction!

A few photos of the completed (and still dusty!) "Open Alpha"... I'll try to post a couple more (and better) pictures in the next days!
It's only a pity I still have to wait for the cable with the Hirose connectors to arrive, before I'll be able to actually test the headphone...

Looking good
I dig the color
Can't wait to hear your impressions of the sound
Something about the point when a make goes from a bunch of parts to a real thing
Its a great feeling enjoy it, it's something you can't buy in any store

Just ordered some hirose çonnectors, the ones I've been using are way to microphonic

They look stunning. I can't wait to make mine. Are they Brainwavz pads? I wonder how good the detail retrieval will be with the reduced pad size, I always find it elevated with smaller pads.

Yes, those are the Brainwavz HM5 pleather pads (not angled). They were suggested to me by Arty McGhee, who's been the first one to test them on his Open Alpha. I fully agree with him that they actually fit the baffle ring pretty well, since the leather can be stretched easily for a snug but still nice and comfortable fit. I was initially making the mistake to order the angled version of the same pad, but thanks to Arty I could notice that the angled version is 10mm smaller (width).

I agree that the reduced pad size should probably enhance the detail retrieval, although I will probably get also the original Alpha Pads for a deeper bass... and as a very small token of appreciation to MrSpeakers!

I've switched between many pads on a pair of T50RPs (Alpha Pads, ZMF, Brainwavz, Angled, Audeze the list goes on) and I keep coming back to the Alpha Pad. The ZMF is a little more comfortable and gives you more low end, but whatever the foam composition is in the Alpha Pads, it stops high end spikes that can become uncomfortable and prevents severe mid range dips. They are one of a kind.

I'm sharing below the stencil I've created in Photoshop and used as reference to cut the foam to be applied around the driver (ear side of the baffle). The internal rounded shape is based on the original foam supplied with the Fostex T50RP MkIII.

For both files,  before printing always check that scaling is set to 100%.
