According to the GSMArena review here, it is pretty bad.
Does anyone have experience with the audio quality through the headphone jack with this phone?
Thanks.

GSMArena's measurements seem to be pretty accurate in my experience. Note that the OnePlus 3 does do very well with amp attached. Get a Fiio A3 to use with it :)

I don't want to bring an amp with me to school just for half an hour per class. I was thinking of buying an iPod Touch though, as a dedicated Spotify player.

Well, there are phones out there with great audio. Look through GSMArena.

Most of them are flagship models that I can't afford. And if a cheaper phone has great audio such as the Asus Zenfone 2, then it has other things that I don't like about it, like the software or weak processor.

Have you considered the LG V10? It's a flagship from last year, not this year, but it still holds up pretty well, and it has top notch audio quality. Should be able to find it for pretty good prices now

I read that you can only use the dedicated DAC on the music player, so not sure if the good audio quality would work while I use Spotify.

+1

Yep. Look around at last year's flagship models if audio quality is important and watch for specials. Samsung Galaxy S6 has decent sound, and less expensive now that S7 has come out. S6 Edge is on special right now at Tmobile.

That was only the case on Lollipop, and a workaround was quickly developed so it was never really an issue. On the Marshmallow update it works on all apps by default

I'm pretty much sold now, except now I researched and found that apparently the iPod Touch 7G will be a huge upgrade. I can keep my Nexus 5 as a phone and use a DAP for music. But then again... the V10 is like a DAP. I can't decide!

Using a separate DAP for music has the advantage of not running down your phone battery. If you don't listen to streaming music, that can be a nice option.

That too, knowing that the Nexus 5 terrible battery life. I don't see a difference in streaming or offline music though.
