I found a pair of Stax SR-X headphones with SRD-7 adapter. Is this a good example of the Stax sound signature?...meaning, if I give it I shot and love it, I can expect that I will probably love higher end models. How does this setup fit in the Stax line-up? Thanks!

it's a good stax, and will show you much of what the better ones can do, but it's unlike the later Lambda models in two key ways: the supraaural design gives it a collapsed soundstage and very fast response-- this part is good for rock, not so good for some other things. Second, the smaller drivers give a flatter response than most Lambdas, but with less bass extension and presence. The SR-X is a scalpel, and the Lambda a sword. Still, a good first choice, just not exactly like later models.

I just 'upgraded' from SR-40s to the SR-X. I'd like to keep this thread alive, if anyone is out there.
First question: How much effect do ear pads have on sound quality?
