Personally I will go with the DS. Nintendo games went downhill after Perfect Dark.

edit:
While 4 hours is pretty bad, do people really need to play games much longer than that?

It's been interesting reading what you think about the DS/PSP, I was always a nintendo "fanboy" as a child

I remember having to save up my paper round money to get the GB with tetris and mario and I spent many happy hours on the system, I kept up to date with the slimmer models, the colour screens the advance version orig and sp and out of all those I sold most of them or lost them!
I fully agree with what alot of you have said when it comes to having time to use the damn things though. Every time I took my GBA on a buisness trip it would end up staying in my bag even in the travelling parts of the trip, I prefer picking up the headphones and listening to music while reading a book...... maybe that comes with age though

From the new systems I think the DS looks to be a pain in the ass to use I can't see myself trying to hold the DS while using the d pad and a stylus comfortably unless I have a table to rest it on!!! The graphics on mario look grand but I've played through mario 64 and I don't think i'd want to do it again.
The PSP looks like a far superior system (design wise) to the DS but you'd have to handcuff the damn thing to yourself if you wanted to keep it while playing it out in public. The battery life tests i have seen have lasted as mentioned in previous posts but while testing the screen was on full brightness and volume on full as well, when these are on lower settings I assume the battery life will be a wee bit better.
I think from now on I'm staying away from the portables even though they are getting better then what they use to be but at the end of the day I spent more time on tetris on my orig gb then I have on all the other portables put together!
If I want a racing game I've got an xbox if I want a bit of mario or zelda I've got a gamecube with gb adaptor and with that all my gaming needs are covered

And when I'm on the road... nothing can beat a bit of sweet music coming from my zen touch with shure e5c's while reading an interesting book

Not only this..if you look at the battery life. The only part of the battery i find to be crap is when wifi is on, which is around 2 1/2 hours. Of course..the best thing on the psp is the battery life with MP3's, which is around 10 1/2 hours. I am sure later on games will disable certain things they dont need to use and not take full task on the processor and increase battery life (not to mention the revisions that sony will release, probly even a bigger battery to fit into the system instead of an entire redesign). I've looked at the DS, havnt played it yet, but considering the games..they look like crap, dont seem very fun (other than mario, which i loved). The console has an ugly bulbous cheap plastic look to it, cant play mp3's, is HUGE in an awkward way and you have to get -use- to the stylis (spelling) which you shouldnt have too..If i am EVER going to buy a DS it will be when they release a new design of it.

Edit: Oh and if a Apple Ipod's screen can stay well with minimal scratches a PSP can probly do it as well.

i thought all that till i bought the ds....me like now and maybe some should quit yapping and start playing!

You do know that the GG was just a repackaged Sega Master System, right? =P

Werd, the GG sucked batteries dry like whoa, I ended up getting a rechargable battery pack for it (that increased the weight quite a bit and protruded out the back a couple of inches on each side) and cost like 50 bux

The GG was awesome. My brother's friend let me borrow his, and it ruled. I use to play cliffhanger and blackjack like crazy. The backlight was a major plus since I played mostly at night under the covers.

Yeah I totally agree. The game gear was ahead of its time. Its too bad fast paced games (like sonic) became blurry and pretty much unreadable at certain points. Otherwise, it was great system. (I still have mine lying around somewhere!

I had a friend with a gamegear once. Man that thing was huge! But all I had was my gameboy pocket at the time and we thought color was the coolest thing ever.

4 hours battery life...bring whatever batteries and adaptors you want with you. My DS is going to run for 16 hours without any adaptors or extra batteries or charging or anything, and I think that is an advantage.

I saw my friend play one of his friends on their DS's today with Super Mario 64. They literally just stoof there, connected, and played a random round. I was amazed, to be honest. The connection and loading they said was slow, but it was only like 30 seconds, seriously. I thought it was cool.

Now if they can just come out with something more than just super mario DS!!
