i thought it was cool when i got it, bought mario 64 ds with it, was fun for a couple hours and thats it. tried to play it again, got bored after a few minutes. so i bought ridge racer, this game blows, atleast mario was fun for a couple hours, the controls in ridge racer are simply not good. playing with the directional pad makes you swerve and weave around, and its a little too tideous with the stylus or thumbstick.
so i get tigerwoods golf ds, i love this game on my pc, so fun, again, not on the ds. the controls for driving the ball are okay, but they are not consistant (sometimes your power is 80%, then its 90%, then its 75%, all with the same exact motion). then you get to the putting green, wow, there is no way to tell exactly how flat the green is, so there is no easy way to compensate for slopes and such. and now, in the green, there is no swing control over the putter, you tap the button, and it does it for you. setting the amount of power is not easy for the swing.
i guess i'm just ranting that i bought this thing and i am not enjoying it.
maybe i'll sell it or something. i'm trying to enjoy, its just not happening.

graphics can take a backseat if the gameplay is good, but ridge racer and tiger woods have crappy gameplay. mario is good, but its the same game that i played on n64, and thats why i think i got bored of it (i enjoyed the mini games in it more than i did the actual game).
maybe i'll get the PSP, but i'll think twice about it now, maybe i'll wait for it to actually release and get some reviews going before i purchase it.
i should have thrown it up on ebay and made a profit off of it, but i thought it the games would get better and i would like it, damn i'm a fool.

Yeah I agree pretty much that graphics are not an integral part of a great game. But cmon! The DS is pretty much a GBA with another ****ing screen on it! REAL nice innovation Nintendo.

Finally, someone dispelling the myth of nintendo's portable godliness. But beware, for there may be nutty nintendo fanboys about . . .

(for the record I like nintendo and sony playstation)

Also, I have a gba and a neo-geo pocket, and prefer the latter at times. I love the clicking thumbstick. It had so much potential, but the snkusa f'ed up in both variety of games and advertising.

i have a gamecube, i love it, enjoying metroid prime 2 a lot. had a nes, snes, n64, loved all of them. this ds, doesnt live up to the hype/expectation. maybe it lacks quality games right now, but i dont think i want to sit on it and wait, spent $250 on it so far. i bought my gamecube with metroid prime 1 for $150 and it kept me occupied for weeks. bought my xbox with halo and it had me occupied for weeks. bought my ps2 with gt3 and it had me occupied for MONTHS!! ds, 4 hours tops i have spent on it. wheres the magic? maybe mine wasnt sprinkled with the factory fairy dust before it shipped, i dunno.

Even the system itself lacks my "sexay approval". Take a look:

Sony PSP:
sexay rating = 8/10

Nintendo DS:
sexay rating = 2/10

lol, okay, thats a little mean.

the hardware is not bad, a little big which takes away from the portability factor, but not bad at all.

the games, the games, the games suck.

While, both systems have their pros/cons
It will come down to the games, and with game boy advance back library, nintento does have the advantage at this point.

I think it's a little early to condem the DS as never having good games. It's only been out about a month. The GBA and GC didn't have any launch games I like so I waited till there were games I wanted on them before buying them. I plan on buying a DS, but most likly not untill the Metroid Prime game is released or maybe I'll even wait untill it gets a zelda title. From the list of PSP launch games I've seen it doesn't fair much better, and lets not even talk about its battery and shotty construction. However all is not lost. While both of the new handhelds aren't to promising at launch (maybe the psp will not be a piece of crap by the time its built for foreign release) the GBA is still awesome. Zelda: The Minish Cap just came out a month ago, and the Kingdom Hearts game just came out like a week ago.

Dropping outside of the DS/PSP debate, the ex-Nintendo pres does make a valid point with the complicated story lines business--the most succesful games as of late have been things like GTA and Halo (Even Halo doesn't have a terribly complex plot, although the graphics on both are not shoddy). The story lines aren't exactly complicated, nor is the game play, when all is said and done. These games, however, are designed to appeal to mass market. Its the hardcore gamers who play things like RPGs/action adventure games outside of shooters and such that want solid story, and will sacrifice graphics--case in point being the success of something like FF Anthologies.

It seems that Nintendo just put together something cost effective and is hoping that developers will come up with something really unique, but it doesn't look like thats happened with the majority of this first round of software.

The PSP's battery life is crap. The big, beautiful screen is unprotected, and it does not take to any shock well. The DS is a GBA (great product) with two screens (lame). I'll stick with the GBA SP. Easily the best portable system in my opinion.

Not going to buy either one of them, even if their games are the best games ever made. Here's why.

The only times I ever have the occasion to use a portable anything are times when I need to pay attention to something else (e.g. running, walking around, riding bike, reading book, working on something, etc.) Periods of random waiting rarely happen, and even when they do, they're seldom long enough for me to sit down and play a game.

I used to have a GBA-SP. I sold it because all it did was collect dust.

I guess if I were either a kid, or traveled a lot, a portable gaming system would make more sense to me. But as it is, if I bought either a PSP or a DS, it'd get no use, while my iPod Mini gets the hell used out of it.

I'm sure there's a lot of people in my position, but who buy these portables anyhow and make excuses to use them when they really either don't have time or don't need to. =P I know my boss at work, while he's waiting for a match to start in some FPS game he plays, he plays on the GBA SP. I mean, oiy... that's just a little much.

(However, I totally will read a book while waiting for a party invite on Final Fantasy XI. I will also read a book while fishing in the same game. =P)
