Oh Schiit, it's the end of the world! Announcing Ragnarok.

  Hey all,

It’s (almost) that time! Ragnarok ordering time, that is.

...

Congratulations, gentlemen! Very exciting news indeed. You don't know how much I'd love to participate in this, but alas, child support and alimony come first. Or so the state of California says so, anyway (CA Family code section 4011).

In any case, I am looking forward to impressions from the beta test crew.

I want amp/DAC combo of Ragnarok and Yggdrasil in one box and w/ a Wyrd module installed

I don't think the guys at Schiit are too keen on the idea of putting a DAC in the same case as an amp. Not only because of possible noise issues (I know its been done well by others) but also the fact that your now sitting there with a DAC that "could" become obsolete as where the amp should be great for a decade or more (a lot more). Though Schiit does offer upgradeable DAC's so who knows? Maybe some day. From my own experience, I have a couple well regarded DAC/HP amp components yet thus far I've always ended up being happier with a standalone headphone amp rather than the one built into the combo's.

I will say that if anyone could do it and do it right its Jason Stoddard and Mike Moffat. I think the Ragnarok is going to get a lot of attention in this industry and I hope that it kicks ass.

Hah, I was just thinking that if Bear got in on this, then the Rag is only a short drive and a quick border hop away...

We can do a mini meet here, you guys can car pool down for it, if I am selected that is...

I hope Jason picks some people with both the K812 and HD800. I would love to get their take on this amp.

I just read the product page on Schiit's website and the concept of this amp has me excited. I guess I wasn't fully aware of what they were doing, but I get a better sense of what Jason is trying to accomplish here.

This could be the one amp that's good with everything and be the "end game" for most folks. I think Jason was trying to say this thing is basically built to be "wire with gain" without saying this since this phrase has been abused grossly on Head-Fi.

Anyway, very excited. I dream of having this along with the Yggy on my desk. Drool...

There is no point in a house now. The Rag can keep you warm in the winter time. You just need a cardboard box to keep the rain out and you're good to go.

Just read the FAQ. As always, good stuff. But really, when answering the question about how you could have great intergrated amp and headamp at the same time, they shoul've just just kept it short and sweet with a "See Leben CS300XS". That would've shut anyone up, I reckon.

I live in Florida, so no winter here, also the FAQ only mentions that Dr.Pepper will cause a shutdown, sooooo rainwater should be okay.
I'll run the idea by my wife and see what happens!

How does the headphone amplifier in this compare to the Mjolir? Is it a real balanced amp from input to output?

It's the same basic topology as Mjolnir, but with extra hardware to allow for single ended headphones (and of course all the extra features).

So yes, it's a real balanced amp.

OR ABOUT HOW IT’S THE TWILIGHT OF THE GODS.
OR IT NOT REALLY BEING THE END OF THE WORLD.

Wish more audio companies had a sense of humor like Schiit. Hi- fi is a hobby, it's supposed to be fun not so serious all the time.

The 3K price tag of the Leben would certainly shut me up.

Hi,

I am interested in a great headphone amp, and would not mind replacing my integrated amp.
For headphones, I am currently using the Ultrasone Ed 8 (no real need for crazy amp as they sound great with the sony PHA-2 or even out of a portable DAP)) but I am considering the HD800 or Audeze LCD 3/X for home use (the Ed 8 are used on commute). The Ragna would do wonder with those I am sure.
However my speakers are B&W 705 and are currently powered by a Marantz PM15S1 quoted at 80W @ 8 ohms. And in some way I feel that this amp is really giving all it has to make those speakers sound good.
I am thus concerned that the Ragna might be too weak to feed my speakers with all the juice they might need.

I would appreciate any opinion you specialists might have.

The alternative at the moment is to simply add a dedicated headphone amp to my set-up, for which the Ragna might be an overkill. (if going with HD800, the HDVD600/800 would be the obvious choice)

Cheers,
Sleepow
