Official X1 stable firmware discussion thread--version 2.0: Added library search function, Recently Played playlist, ReplayGain

Yeah, too bad it's the last firmware version to be released. I think it's actually pretty good! however it would be nice to keep receiving great updates like these for a little longer. Personally I was hoping to get volume control support from my Sennheiser Momentum IE remote, any remote actually.

Anyway, thanks to Fiio for keeping the updates coming for so long, FW 2.0 was a lot of improvement from 1.4, which was the first one I got.

I will give this new firmware a go today. It is a bit disappointing that it will be the last update as I was really hanging out for a bookmarking feature, maybe that is beyond your capabilities to achieve on this unit. Many thanks for all your work.

I agree the bookmarking feature is absolutely essential if I am going to use this player for audiobooks. I originally purchased this player as a high-end audiobook player.  Without bookmarking it can't be used for this. My old worn-out Sansa had this feature so I can't believe a player like this is not capable of being able to do it.   :-(

If the X1 won't ever support bookmarking, I'll have to look at alternative players that do.

Does no more firmware updates mean that FIIO consider the X1 to be obsolete?

Not obsolete, just the firmware is now considered "finished".
It is currently being looked at for porting for Rockbox, but could be years before that is sorted, if ever, Rockbox has a bookmarking system.

In real life I am a software developer.  I know once software is deemed to be "finished" the project starts to die.  Software needs regular maintenance and updates to be able to respond to user requests and evolving requirements.  If FiiO say the software is "finished" then so is the device.  If it still doesn't do basic stuff like bookmarking (and I can't use the device for what I purchased it for), then I'm best to drop it while I can....

Tragic since the X1 player is a quality piece of hardware.

:-(

I'm just going to drop this in here - because I think it is relevant.

At no stage did FiiO ever advertise the X1 as a podcast player - it wasn't an intended function.  If you could play them - then that's a bonus.  At its heart it is a digital audio player - but in reality targeted at the music lover.  So if anyone purchased it for podcasts, and is now disappointed at no podcast feature support - that is really on them rather than FiiO.  Would it have been nice to have that support - probably. But blaming Fiio for something which was never advertised as supported I think is a bit off.

Just food for thought.

I can play podcasts on Fiio X1. Podcast are digital audio files. And I know that X1 was not developed for podcasts, but it was possible to develop the bookmarking issue since many people use mp3 players for podcasts and people request it, since the X1 was for sale there have been several firmware updates and that would have been great. My complain is that Fiio hardware developers didn't listen to some people's request, not just for bookmarking for podcasts, but for other issues that can be read here.

For a dedicated music player that only costs $100, some people really expect a lot, it seems.  You can't expect a DAP for that price to do everything you want, nor can you expect the manufacturer to satisfy everyone's software update requests.  Also, for around $100, you can go buy the xDuuo X3, which has dual microSD slots, but guess what?  It also has issues, with the most prominent being pitch issues that can only be corrected with an unofficial Rockbox port because the manufacturer hasn't addressed the issue with any kind of firmware update.  The sense of entitlement for a $100 music player is a bit ridiculous, I think.  Do a bit more research and pull more money out of your wallet to find the "perfect" DAP that will give you everything that you desire, or just use a cheap smartphone and download Pocket Casts to handle all of your podcasts the way they should be handled.

I had a creative ZEN Micro, which is not manufactured anymore. And it had not only 10 bookmarking, but the most complete firmware that i have ever seen, better than the X1, and it costed 79$. It's a pity that i lost it in an airplane and i can not buy it anymore. I even buyed a refurbished one, but didn't lasted. It's not necessary to have an expensive MP3 player to have all that we need, but i guess that not all the companies are sensitive to all the buyer's requests as they should.
Regards.

I've always been notified of latest posts since I subscribed to this thread. I understand and accept everyone's opinion. I guess the bottom line is X1 is one hell of a DAP that provides great music for a great price! If we can look past some firmware quirks and focus on the music, I believe we've all been satisfied and are still satisfied with it (reason why we still own and still use the device). And for podcasts, I believe it's best enjoyed with a smartphone (bigger screen that can handle both digital audio and video, and even PDFs). Besides, this is Head-Fi. Enjoy the music (above all else)! Cheers!

Regarding the change that adds search function by holding Shortcuts button... Does that means that this is replacing/removing the feature that always takes us to the “Now playing” screen?

  Two questions:
1. Have you noted that with fw 2.0, the the wheel works worst than before?
2. Anybody knows which software is used for developing the firmware?
Thanks.

Which version of firmware is your x1 installed with previously? And have you tried to downgrade the firmware for testing?
