Official Sony DMP-Z1 Thread

May want to wait for the DX340 Max. The DX340 as good as it is, it will not approach the DMP in sonic bliss. Getting the D16 and PB5 however maybe your best option for sound quality. The DX320max is also very good choice and still better sounding than the DX340, but it has been out for quite awhile now and maybe replaced by the DX340 max in a year or two.

Well I own both & i disagree.

Disagree in what ground? I have DMP, DX340, DX320 max and D16 and PB5. I have to disclose that my DMP is not stock given the internal wiring have been upgraded to Neotech silver and gold wires.

No DAP, in my experience, comes close to what DMP can do with space, bass power/texture, and control. It's just physics...you can't get the same level of drive and shielding in DAP format. That's not to say you won't find a more agreeable tonality in a DAP - DMP isn't for everyone. But in terms of refinement, there's generally no comparison, even with more recent, modern DAPs.

On the grounds that I have listened to my DMP’(s) for somewhere over 5.000 hours, which i will always love and you say, the DX340, is nowhere near the sonic bliss of the DMP-Z1 - I disagree.

( and yes, well aware you have modded the DMP. )

Are you saying that you like the DX340 just much as the DMP? I am just curious on what do you find the DX340 to be better?

Don't worry, there is no reason at all that changing internal wiring would achieve anything other than providing the pleasure of doing the task itself. I can absolutely see why doing the work would be fun though.

I didn’t do the work myself but was able listen to the modded unit next to my stock unit and the sonic improvements were worth it to me. I used to be a non-believer but has since learn to do the work myself on the WM1A,1Z, ZX507, and ZX707 annd even hardwiring most of my headphones for the sonic benefits. Of course, I could be hearing things too.

That is very reasonable of you to note that it is possible that you are hearing what you expected and wanted to hear, an improvement. And why wouldn't you want that?

At the end of the day what matters is that you have gear that brings you pleasure. That is what listening to music is all about.

Joking aside I heard the improvements that’s why I went for it and proceed to do more. It isn’t for everybody of course and same thing can be said for capacitors as well. I would not get into this type of modifications unless you can perform the work yourself as cost could be unreasonable, unless you can find someone who can get it done professionally at reasonable rate.

Finally finished reading through all 311 pages. I feel like I know some of you personally by now, especially @Rob49 with your constantly failing DMP 😅 It only took me 7 years, so here's to the next 7 years of audio bliss...

Thanks. I was going to get MDR-Z1R too but even Lavri Grand didn't fix the treble so it's not for me. IER with DMP is insane - best combination I've heard in the hobby.

And you got your unit new or you got it secondhand? Mark and how much did you pay for it? I pay the full price for mine back in 2021 but I got it new. Until this date, I can say the battery inside the device. It's a very high-quality one. I still get in single end that with city quality luck about 10 hours of playtime with the display almost off only occasional alternate it on to check the battery status.

Funnily I have the IER & have never used them with my DMP 😅

Force of habit - I use my Mojo 2 for IEMs as I think for IEMs it's generally a better source... and I think the DMP is far better for overheads (obviously!). My reasoning is that I don't think IEMs pair well with even slightly warmer sources - due to most high end sets being hybrids with lots of drivers such as EST drivers (which most of my sets have) which really shine more on the Mojo 2 & power wise, you're getting 100% of their potential from the Mojo 2. I will certainly try the IER DMP combo after I've finished enjoying my new toy, the Abyss Diana MR via the DMP.

As for the MDR - I know they're not strictly for heavy bass, but that is a big part of the appeal & I sold mine as they were my bass forward headphones & I have other headphones that outshine the MDR in every other area... as for a bass forward electronic music (and actually any electronic music) set that pairs well with the DMP... after a LOT of tries & not quite hits... these beauties. And yes - ABSOLUTELY over the MKII...
