Modi Multibit with speakers wasn’t working fine yesterday. Today perfect. Maybe cables weren’t plugged in correctly or something. 
Objective way to tell if my audio gear is faulty or not?

Does your motherboard have S/PDIF Toslink output? That would be the one hardware suggestion I think is most likely to isolate any issues if there is a problem with your PC. Get an (inexpensive) S/PDIF Toslink DAC like the Modi 2U, and if you don't have Toslink output already, an ASUS Xonar DG which does have it.
It's still not certain is there is a real hardware problem, so consider the return policy and shipping cost. It might be better to buy from a local retailer or Amazon for instance (not sure what's available where you live) if the out of pocket cost after returning is less than buying from Schiit's website.
