NuForce NE-7M button not working with iPhone?

I recently bought a pair of Nuforce NE-7M buds, after reading some great reviews on this site. The sound is actually really great, but the button to answer calls and start/stop/skip music does not work at all. I'm using an iPhone 3G.
I bought the headphones from a webstore, who I contacted this week. They replied that they had the same problem several times with iPhone 3G users, and that aparantly the NE-7M does not work anymore with this version of the iPhone.
 
This sounded at bit strange to me, as the Nuforce website does not mention anything like this, and I never heard of this before. I contacted Nuforce and they confirm that it should work and probably the set is defective.
 
Has anyone encountered problems with the button on this set before? Is it known to break easily or often? The webstore will send me a new one, but I'm afraid they won't anymore if the button fails again...
