NorCal Regional, August 25th, 2007 - Impressions

I did not try the mini^3 since those 3 amps were the only ones on the list of my concern... and partly cause I was lazy and very tired. So past that comparison I did not want to try to produce any more meaningful results.

I thought that the SS-1 reference section sounded very good but I was not listening to it critically for any lenght of time. Mikeymad found the channel imbalance on the "fun" amp side and that threw people off the rest of the day.

I would like to have the SS-1 and my new SDS-XLR next to each other for a good comparo because the last couple of days with the SDS and I really liking it a lot. The sound is very changeable on many levels (rectifiers make a difference, regulators make a difference and can be ignited by pairs for different voltages, the drivers can be changed and the output tubes can be changed). So far, and from my short listening on reference side of the SS-1, I would place the SDS as more engaging and musically exciting amp. I love tubes, so that will have an impact, but there is life and natural ease in my amp that I did not hear to the same level in the SS-1.

Dan's monster SDS is also great sounding and I think would take one almost to the level of my SDS-XLR [but not quite]. Between the Plitron tranny and those hugenormous caps it is fast and dynamic and detailed but with lots of tube goodness. I cannot recall what tube combo (2C51 and 6BL7GTAs?), but I would like to hear it with a 6414 and 6SN7 driver and with a 5965 driver if it can handle it and with all 6SN7s, of course.

Personally, I'm a bigger of fan of both the Tungsol 2c51 and GE 12AY7 over the Raytheon 6414. The 6414 is quite nice but lack a sense of refinement and textured in the bass and the midrange of the 12AY7. The 12AY7 is best among those three tubes. The 6414 has too much gain and a little bit too upfront for my likeing. The performance of these tubes are based on both of my R10s and L3000 via my upgraded SDS-SE.

I should have included the 12AY7 because that was on my mind as well. The 6414 isn't as refined, although the grey plate I have is pretty smooth, but it is a lot of fun and slamming. When I had a tricked out MPX3, I went through all of the 12XX7s I could find and they did some very nice things to that amp. Should be even better with a nice 12AY7 in Dan's or your amp.

Mikhail is sending me out some 12AY7s and more 12AV7s I really liked the sylvania 12AV7 pretty close to a 2C51 if not equal but in a different manner.

ichiboy, for example, is still being lazy and not posting his pics. What's up with that? The meet was three days ago. It is your duty to Head-Fi Bay Area as well as the rest of Head-Fi out there waiting for lust-worthy pics. Summer's almost over ichi, get on it! :0

Haha, thanks for calling me out, I needed some motivation to upload these :p. I still have a month left of summer here, so it ain't quite over for me yet. Anyways here you go-

Our humble setup, it was actually the work of 3 of us all combined to barely make one setup :p. My laptop -> Stello DA100 -> Lisa III/Larocco PRII

You know, I forgot to ask him! Everyone was too focused on the Pico, and I had other things on the brain at the meet.

I think we'll be waiting a bit longer for the new modules though...

^ Yup, whenever you go to a meet your HD650 or K701 is a dime in a dozen. I was commenting at the meet about how unspecial I felt by owning a HD650 :p.

Man I just realized that cotdt might have showed up. Did he show up? I wasn't paying attention enough to who was who to really notice.

It's a good thing the AD2000 has never caught on that much, otherwise I might have to find a new favorite headphone.

Nope, he didn't come.

^ Yeah I was looking all over the place for Cotdt since I wanted to make use of his proposed soldering table. His rig would have been pretty awesome to try out as well.

But then again, I can't blame him at all with how far away he lives.

Quite a few people were looking forward to the balanced β22 that cotdt was bringing, but alas neither he nor the amp showed up. Nevertheless, there were two 3-channel active ground β22s there (mine and rjkdivin's). Rjkdivin is building his balanced β22 now and hopefully you'll get to see/hear it at the next bay area meet.

Unfortunately, cotdt has been ill with severe headaches for the past 2 weeks. I hope he feels better soon.
