good idea to separate this - will save a lot of headache, with people responding to older HD800 posts

i cant wait to see what these look like! though given the numbering and Sennheiser's trends, i forsee nothing more than yet another HD580 update

Hmm. Is this the 'HD800'? I have an e-mail from Sennheiser Deutschland literally saying the HD800 is going to be introduced in 2009.

HD680 is a posted product on the Sennheiser USA website now. There have been headphones labeled different product numbers in different countries in the past, but that would be a bad move in the global consumer economy we have now.

Could be two different phones being released....

If its HD then its a moving coil headphone and thus is boring and almost certainly the latest remix on the HD580, which was the remix of the 540 which was the remix of the 414.

If it isn't planar, it's not worth the time. Senn could do an awesome ortho headphone I'd wager and it wouldn't have the amplification troubles which mar mainstream sales for electrostatic models.

wow, this is great news from Sennheiser! Finally the speculation is put to rest.

So, we either have two cases. Either (1) the HD800 we were expecitng is going to be called the HD680, or (2) they are two unique headphones.

If case 1 turns out to be true, I expect MSRP to be 700-900$us if they keep the HD600 and HD650. If they discontinue either the HD600 or HD650, I expect MSRP to be 600-750$.

If case 2 turns out to be true, I espect MSRP to be 600-750$, with the HD800's MSRP ~1000-1200$us.

Either case, the HD680 will not hit street price for a few months at the very least. I think within a month or so we can expect it to be 50-100$ off MSRP.

Either way, if you want one right when they come out, it's going to be pricey.
