Hi all.

My current setup is Topping E30 DAC and TA-26 Amp with HD-650.
I tried DT-990 pro 250 ohm but they were too bright for me.
I love my HD-650 as my go to headphone but do miss the closed Beyerdynamic bass.

Any recommendation after HD-650 with a similar signature but more bass impact and thump. No issues with open or closed.
Budget: 500 to 750$

I was leaning towards Beyer 1770 Pro or 1900 Pro but afraid that the treble would put me off like 990 pro enough to not go for them even though I like the Beyer bass.

The DT770 250 ohm is more neutral with bass extension over what your used to. I have the hd650 also. Have the dt990 600 ohm and added two plies of toilet paper to tone down the treble peak and really like them now.
The dt1770 was a disappointment, too woolly sounding bass and not more slam than the 770 250 ohm or even the MMX300 Gen1. The 1990 treble was annoying, like when Peter Gabriel hits highs he sounds like he has a lisp. The only newer Tesla I liked was the T1 2nd gen. For the price of a 1770/1990 I'd get the dt770 250 ohm and an open box hifiman he560 (sign in at Adorama and their email list link has huge discounts, like $239 on them). I just don't think most Tesla stuff is worth the price.

thanks for the inputs on the beyers @dunring .
I'll see the hifiman he560, initial reading suggests this could be a good option.

Ive had the dt770 80 ohm in the past and I loved the bass. It wasnt the most open sounding and doesnt tick all the boxes that the HD-650 kinda does.
Ill try the mod if that helps. Thanks again

The whole article on doing it is at Diyaudioheaven. Bob Hodas did a big article about if it removes treble or introduces a comb filter effect. Personally I do it on all my sharp Beyers and it's better than equalizing just to take down the treble spike. I can't play games with the 600ohm DT990 I have on now without two plies on the driver or during some sound effects in game I literally jump in my chair. Listening to them now and so happy with 3db less peak to worry about.

The Beyer DT1770 Pro treble has not been an offputting issue for me. I have owned these for 3-1/2 plus years. The 250 ohm impedance will match well with the TA-26. You will get bass ‘impact’!

Find yourself an HE-500 and never look back.

Another avenue to explore would be the pairing with your amp. You may want to explore OTL tube amps (your ta-26 is not output transformerless) with your existing 650.

I suggest this because although some of the headphones listed above might be an improvement with your current setup, they're not necessarily better headphones than the 650. The 650 scales very well with the right amps and really brings the magic. How something pairs with your system is nearly as important as the headphones themselves. I would go so far as to say that I prefer the 650 with the bottlehead crack amp over a focal elex on a solid state amp (although the elex is a good headphone).

+1

Most of the above listed cans are downgrades. Only more expensive.

Keep the 650s. Upgrade your amp and source. No question.
