Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between the various Ipod Nano's besides storage space? Should I buy one of those invisible shields or a case?

No, no difference besides storage space and price, of course, and if your colour is black or white.
The nano's are notorious for their being scratch-prone, so an invisible shield or similar would probably be advisable, if you'd like your nano scratch-free. And because its an ipod you wont find a limit to the cases available for it.

There is a slight difference in the screen and maybe brightness/clarity.(of the 1gb vs 2/4gb)

BSE paired with an iSkin Duo will pretty much protect a Nano from almost anything.

100% Agreed. I work for a Apple Specialist and we get this all the time.... They buy the ipod we recommend a case, they dont get one and come back complaining.
