New Topping DX9 AK4499 - 100% Balanced??

I got my dx9 a month ago and it is very versatile unit and an endgame DAC at the very least. I agree that the HPA is slightly weaker than what I expected and my Fostex can go almost -10 db volume and still sound comfortable. But my Heddphones v1 have no issue at all at -10 db and do become intolerable as do my HEK SE at anything higher as do my Audeze xc 2021. The AKM DAC chip here is TOTL and will be hard to find at this price point. I have my Q7 for the ESS chip which is a brighter DAC and before this I was using a Chord Mojo which is a very lively DAC. But so far I like the darker AKM EQ's luxuriant sound. But the Chord Mojo 2 is going to be more for portable usage. The dx9 is the heart of my hi fi setup now feeding my Vincent audio preamp. The dx9 has enough inputs to keep the most diehard i2S fan satisfied along with USB and optical inputs. A real luxurious TOTL DAC unit at least for me. My TOTL headphone amp unit is going to be the Burson Audio Solo Voyager which is currently on its way to me.
Hi, how would you compare and rank the Chord mojo2, fiio Q7, topping dx9, burson solo voyager?

Which one gives you the biggest wow factor? Thanks.

Just got the HD800S for my DX9, swapped the connector to balanced and noticed one of the earpiece connectors came loose during the swap.
Filed an RMA. Replacement is due in a week, new one will also come with the 6.35 inch single ended cable pre-fitted (which I definitely won't change this time around).
Would the single ended cable matter on a DX9?
It shouldn't make a difference since the single ended output on the DAC should be on par.
Anybody got info on the single ended output?

Couldn't be happier with the DX9 at the moment... waiting for the DCA E3 to arrive hopefully today or tomorrow.

...though I ran into a bit of a small setup glitch with my rather new Gaming PC (i7, 4080, 64 GB RAM, Win 11) connection and Foobar2000 WASAPI and ASIO in conjunction with the DX9.
I guess I had configured all direct DX9 settings within FB2000 correctly, but when listening, especially with higher res tracks, I noticed some sporadic cracks and this indicated probably to some latency issue in the standard buffer settings. For example, when I use ASIO, I have, of course, several buffer sizes to choose from in the "Topping USB Audio Device Control Panel", beginning with 32 samples up to 8192 samples. 2048 was pre selected natively, and with that, comparatively high buffer setting, I experienced these dropouts/cracks. To me it was strange that with such a potent PC and generous buffer size, this can happen.

Long story short, I set the buffer size to 4096 and all is good. Sure that increases latency, but when only listening to music (and not producing), a higher latency doesn't play any role. So, if anyone runs into the same problem, just increase the buffer size, even maxing it out, doesn't hurt and has no effect on sound signature otherwise.

Solved the cracking noise problem for good. After many hours of trying out everything, because even when playing around with buffer sizes, still the cracking sound appeared, but much less often, so I was too quick to state that I solved it earlier. Now, the final suspect was identified and it was the original Topping USB drivers, 100% sure about that. Now I use the Windows ones (since it's anyway an XMOS device) and it works flawlessly without any cracks anymore.

Am I the only one that has noticed this? Nobody using both HPA and Line Out? Why have Line out be variable at all when you also have a Pre Out?

Nope...so did I. I did during a pre-purchase read of the manual and was rather concerned at what you found (but this typically Chinese-sourced manual is a far cry from the jaw-droppingly wonderfully written Laiv Harmony one). In my case, I would feed one of the best pre-amps on the planet in my Audio Research...so I definitely don't want to use the variable out to send to that.

As you pointed out and as I read it apparently cannot run headphone out and line out at the same time (would have to switch outputs on the rear panel--which is a deal breaker for my difficult too reach setup). I have to think a firmware update could easily fix this... since you purchased it, have you reach out to anyone with a Topping connection to see if they could do that?

The DX9 is overkill in Topping's lineup but it's just been such a joy to use. The dual screens, see-through top and machining / finishing are all lovely. Makes it feel like a unit that costs much more than it does.

I got while ago A70 Pro & D70 Pro Octo, was thinking about DX9 but that is one unit and it keep hands tied if it comes to upgrade/replacing DAC or the Amp section. Then recently got S17 Pro Class A amp and now I understand how much amplification is important. A70 Pro is really good amp but compared to S17 is like comparing 2D to 3D.. my HD800S never sounded so good. Topping has a good products which I like, detailed and clean, but cant compete to 4kg pure amp. Maybe in future (I hope) they will come out with their own Class A fully discrete, that would be phenomenal.

I think it’s easy to underestimate the amp section of the DX9 but after using it for some time, and in comparison to the amps I have on-hand, it’s actually really good. While it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of other DAC/AMPs, for a combined unit I think it’s one of the best sounding. Better sounding than the RME ADI2DAC FS, and that’s after a lot of A/B testing with a friend who owns it. The RME is definitely a more feature-rich DAC that could elevate a system due to its PEQ that happens to have an OK amp section, but the DX9 flat-out sounds better as an all-in-one.
