New Release Today (Includes Leaning Up of User Interface)
May 20, 2010 at 5:21 PM Thread Starter Post #1 of 4
The site software was updated today.  Among other things, the update includes:

  1. Fixes for search index reliability: We have another array of fixes in this release which will further improve search engine reliability, especially for products.  This should dramatically improve the reliability of the tagging system.
  2. "Threads by date" search shortcut: On the search results page, there will be a quick link to repeat the same search using "Threads by date" as the default sort order.  We have also made additional tweaks to make the "Relevance" sort order weigh recency much higher.
  3. "No throttle" option added to subscriptions option page: You will now be able to choose to not have your immediate subscriptions paused between visits to the site.  (This was the default behavior prior to the 2.9 release.)
  4. Subscriptions UI changes: In 2.9, we added the ability for you to choose different frequencies for your subscriptions on a per-subscription basis.  Now, you will now be able to select the frequency with which you will receive updates for your subscriptions at the time you subscribe rather than having to go back and edit it afterwards.
  5. Tweaks for in-thread search results pages with no results: We added in-thread search in 2.9; in 2.10, we added a few tweaks to present a more friendly page if you search within a thread but end up with no results.
  6. Added support for forum descriptions and icons: You can now add small icons and short descriptions to each of your forums if you would like to.  This can be done from the Discussion Forums section of the admin panel.
  7. Links are now parsed in user notes: In admin user notes, we now parse links so it is easy to follow what is happening.
  8. Image upload fixes: We updated a bunch of the back-end code that powers the image upload tool, which will improve its reliability.

Also, you should notice that there was some leaning up of the UI (user interface) that was done, based on your feedback--and there are more optimizations to come in the future there, too. (See the attached screenshot for what was done today.)

In the screenshot below, the before shot is on the left, and the after shot on the right, overlapping.  (The shots were lined up using the very bottom of the cell above the Summit-Fi sub-forum.)

Nice work. If the developers keep this up, the forum should be much more usable by the end of the year.
