Well said masionjar, back in 93', the Flaming lips were far closer to selling out than they are now. Sure, yoshimi got some press, they're still the same band.

Modest mouse in nissan bothers me more than the flaming lips though... and their new album is going to suck too

There's a big problem with bands being used to sell unrelated products. The FL have a solid base of followers that buy their cd's and dvd's. They are richer than you'll ever know. Now the greed seeps in and they start pimping their music to the big corporations and get a lot of money for this. Now wheres their creative drive gonna come from now that they can sit on their arses and get paid by big corporations like Mitsu? Getting my drift yet?

When VW played Pink Moon, I bet the number of Nick Drake fans shot up considerably. I think the same will happen with the Flaming Lips. What's wrong with gaining some more fans and potentially more money?

I'm ashamed to say this but I didn't know who Nick Drake was before that VW ad. So I guess I'm a testament to this. If the Lips wrote or performed a song about how "they're lovin' it" (McDonalds) or wrote a song (for the purpose of obtaining money) about how they prefer Mitsubishi cars, or if they gave permission to use the song in an advertisement for faulty/shoddy products, then yes, there would be something to call them sell-outs for. But calm down, it's just an ad for a car.

And another thing. Now when I ask people if they've heard of the Flaming Lips, if they say no, I'll mention this ad, and then they might actually know the band that I'm talking about for a change. The Lips have been around for a heckuva long time and I only know 2 people other than myself and my family who actually know who they are. Hopefully this will change that.

I think I was driving in a Mistubishi the first time I heard this song...... funny story acually, I think I'll tell it.

Ok, so I went to Japan 2 summers ago (Loved it) and my traveling partner filmed the key moments of the entire trip. During one key moment (A parade of some religious significance) we were in a SUV/Car hybrid thing (Pretty sure it was a Mitsu) and we filmed a part of a parade from the inside of the car. Oddly enough, the summer after that my friend got my into the Lips... and then, once I had "Do you realized" burned into my skull, I watched the video he made and was stunned when I head "Do you realize" playing it the background.

Thought that was pretty funny how my favourite song was playing on the radio in the background before it was even my favourite song.

On the topic of "Selling out", I really don't think it is anything to worry about. They made a good commercial.... and the music made it better. I know commercialism is commercialism...... but some commercials are just REALLY good, almost like small films. Something you'd expect to see at Sundance.... but the Sundance for people with A.D.D. The Lips did a few things that will bring them exposure.... so? do you think that if "un-cool" people or "Posers" start liking the band.... then it won't be "Cool" for you to listen to anymore?

So just cool it until you go to Burger King and order a "Flaming Lips" combo, or you flip to late-night TV and see the band playing music while Chef Tony cuts things with his "Miracle Blades"....

Hope that all makes sense

Can you "supersize" a "Flaming Lips combo"?

On a semi-related note, the 3G iPod pamplets that are distributed in Asia (not sure about the rest of the world) also show a image of the iPod playing the same song: "Do You Realize" by The Flaming Lips. Interesting.

i for 1 love the song, and when i hear the ad, usually sing the rest. i also dig the irony that it is a song about death, very fitting for a car ad.

"hooker with a penis" is such a great tool song.
